Which trainstation to get a bus?
Hi indiamikers-
I'm planning to take an overnight train from bangalore to chennai, arriving around 7.30am. I then want to take a bus to mahabalipuram. It seems, through my research, that no matter what I do I'll have to take a taxi or bus to CMBT and then catch a bus to mahabalipuram. -Is this true? No matter where I arrive in chennai I will have to head to another location to head to mahabliapuram? -is it easier just to have a guest house/hotel arrange pick-up? -Which train station should i arrive at in Chennai? there are many options, and i want to make sure I choose the right one! Thank you thank you thank you! lindsey |

No Your assumption is not correct. There are several places in Chennai where Local buses and even the Air Conditioned ones start. You are not required to travel all the way upto CMBT.
If you are arriving from Bangalore. Most probaly you will be arriving at Chennai Central. From Central you can take A1 which goes to Tiruvanmayur and starts just outside the entrance of Central. You can have a look at the following link to find about the schedule of AC A1. There are lot of Non AC A1. http://mtcbus.org/ACBusesTimeSchedule.asp You can look at the above link to find schedule of 599. (Add 20 mins to schedule for Tiruvanmyur). You can get 599 from the place A1 would drop you. Or you can take other buses headed for Mallmapuram. These would be 568 0r 588. Also at Tiruvanmayur you would also find all the STC buses which start from CMBT. You can either take any of them. |

OK- so either way I will have to take at least two busses- will i waste a half a day traveling? do you recommend perhaps taking the first train to Tiruvanmayur and then catching a rickshaw/taxi to Mahablipuram?

Well there are faster options..!! You can take an Auto or a cab directly to Mahabalipuram from Central . This would be much faster. The distance would be about 56 km or roughly 35 Miles. Cabs would charge you for a return fare and genrally charge Rs10 per Km. Cab would be about Rs 1000 or $20.
