No, I'm just thinking that Landmark has a display of gents' shavers, ladies' epilators, that sort of thing. That's where I'd look first.

But I haven't seen them; it was just an idea.

Very true, most of the times people forget that the same service cost more depending upon how the service is delivered, and there are different segments of customers. In US the service industry is so matured you can really see the price difference and the quality of service increases if you are willing to pay more. In India the service industry is not matured hopefully with the globalization things will change fast.

Nungambakkam... another Chennai 'word' for 'expensive'

but I can recommend a good shop for tiles and bathroom fittings, and also a glass design studio --- should anyone feel that need such things after a hair cut!

It's also a great place for watching the ladies in their relatively revealing fashionable outfits. So much so that the tabloid section of my male brain has made up its own translation for 'nungs'

Oh dear... I really shouldn't admit this stuff, but hey...

That has nothing to do with maturity and everything to do with marketing! That's what marketing departments do: work out how to rip people off and leave them smiling. Actually it is more to do with immaturity.

Trust me; I'm a shopper!

But what India really needs is the realisation of consumer power. You should have seen me embarrassing what I wanted out of a car dealership yesterday! I have a loud voice, and no qualms about letting other potential customers know what's happening.

Globalisation....

With great care. Corporate power lies that way.

I was reading an editorial last weekend (TJS George, Sunday Express) lamenting the fact that many Indian school children these day s are somehow picking up the impression that The East India company was good for India!

Sixty years ago India got rid of that. Now Walmart wants in

But you are right that standards of service here can be pretty dismal. Too many times recently I've been met with look of amazement and a response that amounts to "You didn't tell me you wanted a good job!". Too many times I've met with the attitude that an excuse and a 'sorry' is the end of the matter.

Wheel bolts.

Not to mention the centre boss thingy for the alloy wheels. We had been talking regularly to our sales guy about the fact that the centre bosses were missing, and they'd used ordinary steel-wheel bolts. He said go to the showroom Saturday.

He wasn't there, but we saw, with some delay, a guy who provided the centre bits. But, apparently, the bolts did not come with the wheels. I pointed to a demo car: same alloy wheels, Stainless bolts. Sales person got on phone, told me, no, you got the right bolts. Told him I didn't believe him because I was standing next to a demo car.

Accessories man started to be insistent, so I pointed out that Rs16,000 for allow wheels (I could have shopped around, but I'm not that fussed) fitted with these bolts was crap, and I never saw such a thing. Agreed to talk to GM. Went back inside.

Accessories man is wandering around for another ten minutes, so I do my "HELLO _IS ANYTHING HAPPENING HERE PLEASE" loud bit and entire busy showroom goes silent .

Receptionist trying to get GM. In a meeting (ha ha). Would I like to talk to her on the phone? No, I want to talk to her here. (I'm not going to be shuffled off into an office where I can't be embarrassing, either). Sorry, GM is with a customer. Mrs N chimes in, what does she think we are? just because they have our money, we are still a customer. Girl goes back to phone (I feel sorry for her, she's only a receptionist for goodness sake, and apologise to her on the way out for causing her trouble).

Eventually another guy we saw when we bought the car turns up and says, sure, he will bring the bolts to our house next week. No problem.

We'll see...

We also went to collect the car Registration Certificate. The guy who dealt with that was very efficient, and promised to sort out change of address for us.

This company, by the way, have been up and down. We started off with a bunch of wallies who knew nothing and made silly promises on price and delivery (they all got sacked). The people who handled the deal from there were pretty good, apart from sorting this (hopefully final) issue.

Maruti Swift: It's a cheap car, its tiny and further built down to price for the Indian market. But, for all that it (the new diesel) is a great little cheap car .

Maruti do seem to have a reputation for chasing errant dealers if you complain to them, so I sprinkled plenty of such threats into the conversation.

Life is a shopping trip. The lesson of this sort of thing is to be hard, tough and stubborn without getting hot inside. Once the blood starts to boil, not only do you loose effectiveness, but it takes hours to come down again. Did fairly well on this one, a little heated, but back to normal on about 15 minutes. We never did get to see that manager, but one should always quit while ahead!

Consumer Power: Yeah!

See Team-BHP for a great cars-in-India board.

Maturity is a definition used in the business world to indicate how well the service is delivered and how much quality is maintained, if you can deliver the service more innovatively then you can demand higher price for that service. In India the service Industry is in its infancy.

Everything changes with time, we had a debate about Wal-Mart earlier in this forum, what has happened in the past cannot happen today. You cannot land on someone’s shore and claim that it’s your country, those days are over. If America and China can manage Wal-Mart why can’t India manage Wal-Mart?

Lady hair stylist's hands are much softer, smaller and thus give a slightly better cut IMO. With that in mind, is it possible nowadays for a Gentleman to get a Lady to cut their hair in India. If so where would one go for this preferred service?
