Well Not sure about a Chennai...but here in Delhi I pay Rs.20 for a haircut...Rs 10 for a shave..

And I not the one to compromise that much on sanitation and other stuff...I mean all middle class people use the services and we are educated enough to know the difference between clean and unclean...

You can get a haricut sitting on a chair under the tree for Rs.5 as well, but I don't believe that person charges that much money to give good sanitation..

Danie, you don't have to like my comments. There's nothing wrong with pointing out that the same thing that costs a lot in a five-star hotel can be had for much less around the corner.

Nor is there anything wring with staying in five-star hotels; I'm rather fond of it myself. I'll even eat in their restaurants.

Then I'll go out on the street and get a proper cup of chai for Rs.3! I have seldom had good tea in posh Indian hotels.

As to the hair cut; Your choice. The OP's choice. My choice. I don't recall being disrespectful.

And from the previous two posts I now learn that I might be paying too much for my haircuts!

Never mind, like Danie, I don't care how much I pay for a haircut!

Especially as I only get one three or four times a year

One of the great things about travel in India is, if you see somebody in the street with a great looking hair cut, or coat, or sari etc. - just go ahead and ask them where they got it and they usually will bend over backwards to assist you.

Hi Nick! How are you? Long time no see, well thats because I havent logged on in a while. Missing my fave site so I came back and saw a great post about haircuts in Chennai.

Danie as regards to Nick's response to you. I dont think he was trying to be disrespectful to where you get a haircut? He was just saying the Park Sheraton is expensive and it is and well sometimes it isnt worth it.

I always tend to splurge when I am in India and being that my hubbys family is in Chennai, my spurlging takes place there... much to his chagrin. We all have different ways and economies, but hey in the end we are all "fruit" hehe...a reference to my fave movie, "my big fat greek wedding".

For me, spending the money in a five star hotel is fine if you are getting someone special or if you have problem hair which my hubby has hehe...receding hairline..hehe

I highly recommend Mohan at Taj Corommandel's barbershop. He has a knack for cutting and making thin hair look fuller which is exactly why my husband has been going to Mohan for 14 years. When we know we are flying into Chennai from the US, we email ahead to make sure we get an appointment with Mohan as he is in high demand. He has his regular cricket star, bollywood clients, but he is very down to earth. Try him you will like him!

Take care

Now that's dedication!

I used to be very fussy about who cut my hair, and went to two generations of the same family in Islington, London (Shades, Pentonville Road, in case anyone wants a recommendation: both men and women catered for).

When the income ceased, I started going to the Muslim shops in my-then-nearby East Ham: they used to compete viciously, big signs, £5.00; £3.99, £3.00 --- the price seemed to go down all the time.

The only trouble there was that, although they seemed to be able to all sorts of trendy-looking stuff for the youngsters, anyone over the age of forty left the shop looking like ...a middle-aged indian moslem! But Hey! It was cheap.

So guys... How much does a 5-* cut cost here? I might just be tempted!

One of the many things I admired about our wonderful ex-prez, Abdul kolam, was his hair cut! Or rather, lack of it!

DocGirl... nice to see you too

Larkitekt, quite a few barbers use them nowadays. Ask the nearest one wherever you are in India (madurai?)

Off the top of my head, Burma Bazaar may be a decent place to search in Chennai.

That is probably a much more difficult thing to achieve on the street.

Try Spencer Plaza --- Landmark or the big Electrical shop I forget the name of.

If you buy it from Burma bazaar, make sure that the one they give you has actual working insides!

Um, well, I used to get my face and skull done for around 7-10 Rs. (kind of funny haggling with someone with the power to slit your throat then and there I'll admit. You know that scene from Once Upon A time In The West? It took me some getting used to.)

They'd do it like they had nothing but punk rockers coming their way for the last decades though. Religious thing no doubt. (My first in Mumbai did walk out with me to see how the crowds would react.)

Anyway I don't really see the issue. But then I often don't it appears.

Oh and here I was thinking we were all nuts.

Note to myself: We are all fruits, we are all fruits, we are all fruits. Not nuts!

hmmm... it works, I am feeling all fruity

No suggestions for girls?

I can't pay Park Sheraton prices, but there must be some good mid-range places?

A 20buck haircut at my regular behind my house usually does the trick. If you have a healthier wallet unlike me, try Ambuli(A/C) near the alwarpet flyover for Rs80. Got some good feedback from my friends.
