I would go via Pondicherry, Madurai and Kanyakumari, swinging south to the tip of the country, and then coming into Kerala from the south. Or you could hit some combination of Bangalore, Coimbatore and/or mysore if you went west first. The ghat places like Ooty and Kodai are overrated, IMHO, and can be missed.

Don't forget Thanjavur.

Madurai, though quite touristy is really a must on the way.

I forgot the route, but if coming from Mysore ( Kanataka ) or Maduarai there are VERY scenic rail journeys ( 6-7 hrs ) through the Ghats. I would HIGHLY recommend taking one of these. You'll need to change from broad guage to narrow for the leg through the hills ( Kodai Rd ?? Steven Help ! ) but the narrow rickety trains add to the charm of snaking through the beautiful scenery.

You'll enjoy this MUCH more than a stop in Kodaikanal - which I found underwhelming.

Cochin ( Ernakalum ) is where you'll end up - well worth a couple of days. Ernakalum City ( the modern centre of Cochin ) is a great medium sized modern city and is useful for excellent shopping and has some superb restaurants ( try the thalis at Greenlands Hotel MG rd ). Some great dark dingy bars on and around MG Rd for refreshments.

This is my favourite part of the world...

It's not a busy route, and I remember going standard 2nd class. If I'm not mistaken, the suggestion was from the 'Rough Guide' ( A UK based guide book ) - probably the South India edition, so a trip to the library or bookshop might be useful.

It genuinely was delightful - left Madurai very early morning and then the 'peak' of the trip was in the afternoon arriving Ernakalum early evening..

Two of my favoriite REGIONS in INDIA, both fascianting regions, very diverse, and a welcome change from the NORTH!. fOR a trip like this, depending on your budget, you CAN do this route by a combo of car/driver/, bus, train, whatever fits your budget..I put alot of programs togther for people in these regions, and just recently a very extensive one, so i will jot down some of the main destinations incorporated in the journey, to GIVE YOU an idea!..THIS TRIP was mostly done with private car and driver..
(TAMIL NADU!)
Chennai
KANCHIPURAM-temple town and silks
MAMAHALIPURm-Shore temple/scluptures.
PONDICHERRY-French colonial charm-Auroville
Tanjore-ancient Capital/temple/fort

Munnar is magical

I fell in love with Munnar when I was there back in February. The best way to see it is by motorbike, car or jeep from Cochin. Many people just take the bus up there and then hang around Munnar town which really doesn't offer much. You need your own transportation to take you through the hills for hours every day. We rented a car and had a driver/guide take us from Cochin to Munnar to Madurai and back again. Definitely one of the most amazing weeks of my life. If I was brave enough I would have done it by motorcycle, which still might happen one day. The guide specializes in this region, as well as the Himalayas, and made the trip all the better. If anybody is interested in doing the same thing, I can give you the contact info of the guide.

Sep. 21, 2004. Amma conducts the International Peace Day prayer at Amritapuri. She gave satsang on the troublesome state of the world and the need for everyone to cultivate love and compassion and to pray for peace and harmony.

Try dropping in to Courtrallam in Tirunelveli dist. Got the best waterfalls where you can actually bathe. check when you've landed in Madras whether the 'courtrallam season' has started. If it has, which depends on the rains, Just take a taxi & go.

Just go!

Hi,
Never miss the backwaters of Kerala.
Kollam u can take that boat ride in ASHTAMUDI KAYAL. Near to Kollam Bustand there is KTDC office. There are speed boats as well as Row boats and peddal boats are available.
It is available in hourly basis. starting from one hour onwards.
When u touch trivandrum u can get in touch me if u need any assitance.
I am presently staying in God's own Country.
May be we can plan hav IM meet too...?
Bye for now
take care and keep smiling
