Weekend trips from Chennai
My wife and I will be leaving for Chennai (first trip to India) next weekend and will be staying for 8 weeks. Unfortunately I am going for work and we will only have weekends available to travel around. I don't think I can afford the NR airfares so this will limit us to places we can get to by train or car. I am looking for suggestions of places we could visit over a weekend.
Between this site and Lonley Planet I think I have some possible trips down the coast figured out.
Pondicherry - This looks like it could be a long day or overnight trip by car.
Kanyakumari - If I am reading the train schedules correctly this could be done Friday night down and Sunday night back by express train. Is this possible?
Would a trip to the backwaters in Kerala be possible?
My wife wanted to go to Goa but it looks like the train would be 24 hrs each way.

Mysore, Madurai, Trichy, Tirupati, the Coast or Caves around Visakhapatnam, the nightlife of Bangalore are all options, Kerala might be just a little too far though.
You could also try the very scenic rail trip to Ooty.

Other places yo need more than weekend.Weekend trips,Pondhicherry,Mamallapura m,Tanjore,Kancheepuram.if u can get get 3 or 4 days,then you can try Ooty,Kodaikanal,Kerala.its one night traval time.
