Waiting Room (A/C) at Egmore Railway Station
I am visiting Chennai Int'l airport at midnight, after a week. I am traveling from airport to Egmore railway station(2AM) to catch a train at 7AM.
Does anyone know if there are any AC waiting rooms for passengers at Egmore railway station? I guess finding availability in retiring rooms are difficult!! Any information is appreciated. Thanks |

My last visit to Chennai there was no A/c waiting room and you need a confirmed ticket to make use of the waiting rooms or retiring rooms for that matter.Best would be to use a good hotel room nearby and then board the train.

I have to say that I only saw an AC waiting room at a few stations - Howrah in Calcutta is the only one that springs to mind. They are usually only available to passengers traveling in the AC classes, and yes they usually do check tickets (or at least they seem to enforce it at exactly the moment you really need an AC fix).
All railway station waiting rooms are generally only open to ticket holders (though I'd assume that if you're going straight to the station you will already have your ticket booked!). If you're not traveling AC, your options are more limited. Your chances of having some kind of dedicated waiting room are best if you're a woman. Some states have better waiting room facilities than others. I remember U.P. train stations being particularly hopeless. No idea where Tamil Nadu falls in that sort of thing. |

To clarify, I have already booked a confirmed 2AC ticket for the train. I need to stretch my legs for 4-5 hrs somewhere.
Anyone visited Egmore station recently as I read somewhere on net that there is new AC waiting room for passengers? |

Sorry, only know Central, and have not needed a waiting room.

There will probably be some sort of waiting room you can use. It may not be air conditioned. It may not be particularly luxurious. If there is no specially dedicated waiting room, there are plenty of benches and chairs to sprawl on, and a lovely pay toilet for your convenience. This is especially true if the station is large enough to have retiring rooms.

Well, I am guessing the airport would be a better place to spend time and leave there to the Railway station at the right time to catch the train.
I am familiar with Central. Don't think I have even been inside Egmore. ![]()

I think Chennai airport has retiring rooms, and that this has been confirmed on this site sometime. That is a possible option.
So far as the general public space is concerned, if I remember correctly (I'm just heading straight for a car when I arrive) there is limited seating available near the arrivals exit. You could just grab a seat there, open a book and dose for a few hours. Perhaps chain your bags to your leg. So far as general public spaces are concerned, it will be less general and public than the railway station. If you want to be awake and people-watch, the railway station could offer the greater interest. When you say after a week, you mean like, next week? It won't be dreadfully hot in the night on the railway station, although it will be humid. The airport building will be AC. |
