Hello!

It seems that I will spend this long weekend in Chennai so I'm thinking about some activities so that I don't die of boredom. In Czech Republic I love to go to zood so I was thinking about going to Vandalur Zoo (Arignar Anna Zoological Park) here in Chennai.

Can somebody please tell me whether this zoo is worth it and what is the best way to get there: bus or train? And in case somebody would like to join me, I will be really happy

Thanks!
Petra

No advice, haven't seen it. Just another tip: There is a crocodile farm just south of Chennai, about a 1.5-hour's bus ride; ask for the Crocodile Bank as it's called, people (certainly hotel staff and relevant bus personnel and the likes) will know it.

Apart from some foreign species, several Indian crocodile species are bred here, for conservation and study purposes and (so I hear) to be put back into the wild as well. I found the ponds and the general park quite attractive, and the staff (some of whom speak very good English) seemed really dedicated. There are also plenty of information boards to tell and raise awareness about the various animals (turtles among them).

Snakes are kept here as well, and their venom extracted to produce anti-venom. This is done by the Irulas, a tribe who are traditionally snake handlers. Visitors can observe this, although this part seemed to be closed when I visited some weeks ago.

Check also their website at: http://www.madrascrocodilebank.org/. Should you want to check out Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) as well, this is just a half hour or so further south by bus, along the same route. If you get up early ('ish), both could easily be combined on a day trip; or alternatively, spend a night or two in Mahabs (M'puram), which features plenty of guesthouses.

Yes, the zoo is worth it. Bring your own food,IMO--the canteen is pretty limited to biryani and omelets. You can take the train and get a rickshaw to the entrance. You can take the bus, but it is pretty hot now...

In fact, I went to the zoo in March, and I didn't finish it all but decided to put it off until Oct. or Nov. Even tho' almost all of it is shaded, IT WAS HOT THEN.

Petra -
You'll havce to walk 2 kms if you take a train. Your best bet is to take a bus. A18, B18 and E18 goes to the Zoo.

I'm a nature and wildlife freak so I'll say it's worth visiting. But don't have high expectations or expect to see a mini San Diego zoo.

Take the auto for that 2km!

I also recommend the zoo; it is a nice place for walking, and one can see some birds and animals at the same time!

It is very busy at the weekends --- and it will, indeed be very hot. Usually I can be tempted by a zoo visit, but I think it will be too hot for me.

I think that Vandalur zoo is India's oldest. A few of the cages may be a bit small, but mostly the animals are in good condition, and are well looked after. There are lots of interesting things to see, and I don't think that anything will really upset you. Because it is in a huge park, there are wild birds, and sometimes creatures, to watch too.

Yes, but this zoo is literaly in middle of a forrest so it'll be a bit cooler than the rest of the city and you can rest under tree shade.

True. They installed a video camera for a White tigress so as to monitor it's litter. I think it's the best zoo I've visited in India (not that I've visited many )

Petra and other IMers -
How about a visit to the Central Jail at Park town? They're going to demolish it soon. It's a sort of museum plus part ruins of prison.

Can one be metaphorically in the middle of a forest?

Well, yes, I guess one can: I don't know if a zoo can, though!

There is plenty of shade, but set against that is its greater distance from the coast. I've been there in March and July, as well as winter visits --- but my wife won't hear of going in May to June.

Don't you just hate those weekend mis-matches?

Another time for you guys, maybe.

Maybe an IM Zoo Meet, in fact?
