If you go to morning/afternoon sessions you will find many of them almost empty, and usually free. Some venues will be packed for the evening sessions, but just get there half an hour early and you should be ok. If you can't get in, there'll be several other choices within walking distance!

Any way to buy tix in advance? I'd like to see Srinivas at Bharat Kalachar.

You'd have to contact the specific organisation and ask. Google might help!

Their site doesn't seem to mention it.

It's the program on 17th you want to see?

Good choice! The mridangam player, Trichy Sankaranan, is wizard. It is very rare for any of the very top artists in any section to live outside of India, but he has done for several decades now, being a professor of music at Toronto.

Unfortunately for me, you must be in Chennai in order to book in advance. I am in Bangkok. There is no way to book in advance by credit card. I emailed the venue yesterday. I think it will be a popular concert as the musicians are internationally known.

Any other performances on either Dec. 17 or 18 which are not to be missed?

Just get there early; you'll get in.

Popular it may be, but so will a dozen other concerts at the same time be.

The ones that may be seriously hard to get into are The Music Academy and Bharatya Vidya Bhavan, the latter because it is usually free.

classical music in chennai

Hi. This message is for you Nick. I could not figure out how to send a private message to you but know it used to be possible. I have been reading your advice for the past year, and have been in India for five months now, and visiting Chennai for a couple of weeks, starting next week, mainly to hear see feel the classical music there. However, I would love to meet you, and your wife. Any chance? Barbara

Have a meet up for people who are going to be here over the next couple of weeks and who have come for or have a particular interest in, the music.

I'll be busy with the usual tourist stuff during the days on Dec. 17/18, but, evenings are good. I'll be there only those 2 days and leave on the 19th am. for Mamallapuram and points south, then Kerala. Back to Chennai for a day on Jan. 3.

Any info on the Mammalapuram festival? I will be there for 2 days after Chennai.
The Mammalapuram festival is usually in end Dec - Jan . The papers will have information on the same

Pls visit Dakshinachitra if you have the time

Also attend some dance performances if you like during the music festival

What about a maybe we all try to get to that concert on the 17th evening? I don't know if there will be any food there (I don't even remember the venue, will have to check) but I'm sure dosa or, at least, chai, will be available not too far away if we want to chat about it afterwards.
