Upcoming events in Chennai
I've got about 20 days from now to burn and I was wondering which events are up in Chennai during those days.
I've heard about the Chennai International Film Festival on the 14th and then there's Chennai Open on the 31st. Any other fun event that's within the next 3 weeks? I'm still checking out the trekking forum and the photography threads for anything fun to do during that time. Any recommendations? |

The Chennai event of the year: 'The Season', the music festival... lots of programs in lots of places every day.
If you like Carnatic (Southern Indian) classical music, or think you might, see The Hindu newspaper every day for listings. Also see: Kutcheribuzz December season for a write-up of what its about, and listings too.

@Nick-H: Thanks! But I've gone for a few kutcheris and unfortunately I didn't quite get it. I need to get used to it first.
@backpakker: Thanks for the link! Ultimate Frisbee now added to my list. Does anybody know when the Turtle walk is on? Anything else in Chennai that's fun to do? |

Can anyone tell me some of the better musicians/singers/dancers who will appear in Chennai's music festival? I will be there on Dec. 17 and 18.

The early evening slots are always given to the better-known musicians.

Thanks for that. But, since there are many venues with different performers, I was wondering who are the performers to really keep my eyes on. I am not familiar with South Indian performers. Any big names for me?

And the crowd favorites usually are: Sanjay Subrahmanyan,Aruna Sairam,TM Krishna,Ranjini-Gayatri...These are vocalists. The interesting instrumentalists: Kadri Gopalnath Mandolin Srinivas Dr Ramani You can probably stick to a couple of Sabhas (say Narada Gana Sabha and the Music academy). The big names anyways are going to be rotating bwtween the sabhas.Like Nick said, the late evenings and night concerts are biggies.

In fact it may not be the best of ideas to start with a big name!
I think you'll find a name or two from Galahad's list performing over those two days. I had composed a post earlier, but technology stole it from me . |

Much thanks. Since we have only 2 days in Chennai, this should focus our time. Is it necessary to get the tickets in advance? I would think so.
Any info on the Mammalapuram festival? I will be there for 2 days after Chennai. |
