Captain, I do too. Have spent time with the poor who have no access to healthcare in India- or access to very little. And this has made me feel like I shouldn't "take advantage" of this possibility. But....as a nurse in the US who has limited healthcare coverage- while working in a hospital daily caring for patients and yet knowing the impossible costs of healthcare and that insurance companies will look for any way not to cover expenses, I get frightened by the future sometimes. So it is good to be reminded of this possibility. What a beautiful thing- to find in India the help I don't find in my own country even though my every day work is in that very field.

Even in India things are not very rosy with insurance thingy..in a company I used to work for (Fortune 5 entity), all employees were covered under Mediclaim...it covered us for Rs.1 Lac for hospitalization (5 years back)..
So whenever some colleague faced some medical problem in the office and it too complicated to be sorted out by the in-house medical room, they took the person to a hospital in Gurgaon...and over there even a normal person became sick..I mean they gave such medicines and followed such procedures that resulted in huge bills, ofcourse the patient (people in early 20's living away from Family) won't give a damn, he/she doesn't have to pay anything and the hospital used to claim those huge amounts from the insurance company.. PS : It was also lack of knowledge of the person treated that led to this. |

can not get adequate healthcare; who can not even afford basic healthcare because they are the working poor; who have catastrophic illnesses and whose insurance companies drop them because they have reached the dollar limits; who can not even get health insurance even tho they can afford it because they have "pre-existing conditions"; -- the list goes on and on. I and my fellow lefty bloggers are on a rant and roll about health care for women in America -- misogynist doctors, the inequities of health care of men v. women, medical research dollars spent on women's cancers -- that list also goes on and on |

Just the Pill Prices Will Kill Ya'
I just spent over $100 USD for THIRTY pills for my dad's high blood pressure. One prescription for one month. Having seen pill prices in other countries, it makes me sick to know what the profit margin is. And I know, MILLIONS goes into research, but even more goes into pockets.

I'm adding to the congrats for the people who had successful surgery in Chennai!
Here in the US my husband and I don't have medical insurance as it is unaffordable. We stay as healthy as we know how to and we can't think of all the "what ifs" or life would be unbearable.
