The Weather in Chennai

Here is an excellent private site, bursting at the seams with current weather situation in Chennai and historical information.

Unfortunately the location/co-ordinates are not given, but maybe the proprietor doesn't want to advertise their house address

Link: Kea

Here is the Indian Meteorological Department site. You can click on the front page map to access the city you want to see information for.

All those good old rainy days are over... The heat wave has already started and its time to turn to our saviour, Air conditioners. But still the northern parts of India are reeling under an immense cold wave

Question Weather in July/August 2008

Hello,

This is my first post on indiamike. Thanks to everybody for a great forum. I have been reading a lot of posts here, which has been a great help.

My concern is: Will it be a good idea to go to Chennai and other parts of south india in July/ August, or will it simply be too hot and moist? I live in Northern Europe, so i can't say that I am used to tropical weather. I have experienced 45/113 degrees dry heat over a week in Greece, but that was a bit too much.
I plan to be staying for 2 months in south India, so there is time to adjust.

I have read other questions about the weather, but sometimes it helps to ask the question yourself

You won't get 45C in South India in July/August. But parts of it can be humid, eg Chennai. Nowhere will it be searing dry heat, though it can get quite warm during the day and outdoors.

You may even get some rain in some parts of South Central India.

If heat is a large factor, and if you have a choice, look at the end of the year, preferably.

Kerala will still be having heavy showers, but sunshine too. Could be nice.

Chennai should be cooling down quite nicely from the summer peak which will have passed some time in May or June. There should be no rain, but last year there was.

Munivar, yes there has been rain here last week or so, I see from my ForecastFox toolbar that there might be a thunderstorm tonight.

There has been a lot of crop damage in the state; I think this un-seasonal rain came at a bad time for the farmers.

Half an inch of rain always causes choas in Chennai, as it seams that talking about drainage gets politicians more votes than doing something about it.

50C? It never ever gets that hot here; you'll have to go to Rajesthan in the summer for those sort of temperatures.

I don't think it even got quite to 37 today, but after a couple of cooler days with showers and cloud, it has felt hotter and very sweaty. I'm simmering quite nicely just now!

Hope you have a better day tomorrow.

No one has mentioned the weather in Dec. What is it like in the
month of December in Chennai and if one(like myself) travels
to Velankanni. What should I look forward for. Because here
in US, its downright cold 24 degrees F.
Thanks.

cold???

[QUOTE=devi123;598267]Chennai is a hottest and coldest place. In October and November month is a rainy season, so that time most coldest time. In April month is a summer season. So that period more hotter in Chennai. so that is weather condition in Chennai.

Is it that hot even at night? I mean, is it even worth bringing some "warm" clothes (jacket, long-sleeved shirt etc.) or is it just wasting of space in the luggage?
