taxi from airport

Hey there

We're flying to Chennai tomorrow and want to try and avoid what is usually the first rip of trick in the book - charge 10 fold for the taxi from the airport 'cause tourists have no idea what the going rate is.

Does anyone know roughly the price fro Chennai international airport to Egmore?

Also, we're looing for a budget place to stay - has anyone stayed in a 1/2 decent place. We're thinking about Hotel Regent (300-Rs).

cheers
Danielle

i was in chennai in 02 and stayed at Broadlands in Triplicane, LP once called it a travellers institution, cleanish rooms set around courtyards, had a great time there, staff where very helpful, if you can try to reserve a rooftop room,( there are 2, highly sought after) a little more than 300rp but worth every paisa, other rooms from 200 up ,phone8545573./8548131 There is a prepaid taxi counter at the airport, found this the best way to go,we had to give the driver a little something once we got there , but hey.

IIRC the taxi charge (arranged by my guest house) was 350, non-ac. I think I gave the driver 500. (august 04)

Previous year I got a tour company in Kerala to arrange a car to meet me at Chennai airport, and ISTR that cost rather more, maybe 500+

This was Royapettah. Egmore is just a litlle bit further

.. do the pre-paid thing, although I remember there are two, and someone I met and I used the counter on the left for a two stop off job and there was a little bit of overcharging.. Nothing to worry about, but even with 'pre-paid' it's worth keeping the brief clear...

How much, where to ? ... and let's go !
