Sunday in Chennai
Any suggestions on something to do on my first Sunday in Chennai? I have access to a car so I'm able to travel a bit.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions |

But before exploring the outskirts, how about getting to know a little more of the city?

Shopping: T. Nagar for silk and jewelery, Spencer Plaza for gift shops, clothes, Chennai's 'modern' shopping centre. Oh, I forgot, a new, more modern, shopping centre has come up (as they say here, as if things grow rather than get built) in Cathedral Road.
Sightseeing: Kapaleswara temple, Mylapore; museums, egmore; marina beach; You could do worse than just drive around, get the feel of the place. If I was you, I'd want to first get to know my immediate locality, and I'd want to do that on foot. But watch out for the sunshine! |

Here's a suggestion:
do nothing. walk to the beach and check it out. (or if you prefer, go down to the drive in theater and use the bowling alleys ther for a bit.) you could try to catch a leasurely lunch at one of the ecr hotels too.(fish cove, ITDC/silversands)...or visit the corcodile park.) (all of this is possible in a day without stretching) |

All great suggestions.
Doing nothing sounds good too. On hot Sunday afternoons I used to lie down with a book, under the ceiling fan as it whirred along. After a while, I would get up and take a cup of tea to the balcony and people-watch. Now I miss being 15 in Madras. Find out if the bookshop "Giggles" is open on Sundays. It's a nice little shop. Might be fun to browse there. |

Aside: recommending a 200km road trip to someone who just arrived in Chennai is dubious. There's plenty to do here and he'll spend plenty of time sitting in the car during the week
![]() Anyway, sorry I didn't see this until Monday, so file these suggestions away for another weekend... - I went to Spencer Plaza my first Sunday in India. It's a pretty standard way to get a gentle exposure to India, but if you're well traveled and don't have a need to buy anything for home yet, it would be pretty boring because it's not too different from a Western indoor mall. - For a better option, have your driver drop you in T Nagar at the west end of Panagal Park (Usman Road, I think it is). From there, you can just walk the shopping area, dodge the beggars (or indulge them, I suppose), and get a feel for the city and its attendant heat. There's a nice-sized fruit and vegetable market very near the local train station, a few blocks south of the Park and a few blocks West from Usman road. (Others may be able to keep me honest here. I don't know the name, but know it's one of my favorite places to stroll in Chennai.) - Sunday evening at Elliot's Beach is requisite. Stroll the boardwalk, watch the kids rollerskate, and walk down to the beach and just enjoy the scene. I'm interested to know what you ended up doing and how you found it... |

Mambalm railway station? That would be at the end of Ranganathan Street.
Right... visit T. Nagar on a Sunday afternoon. Maybe start in Pondy Bazar and stroll towards Ponegal Park, where Mrs P can wonder at the big silk shops. You think it is busy? You haven't even started on "busy" until you get to Ranganathan Street (where Saravanah Stores, etc is)! There is a good fruitjuice place at the start of the street: you can get a seat in the basement. |
