Hello all,
My husband and I will be passing through Chennai for 2 nights in Feb. We are in and out by train so I was thinking somewhere close to the train station might be good but I am open to any suggestions. Budget up to Rs 2,000 per night max. Looking for clean and comfortable. I have been reading a lot and my head is spinning . Would appreciate your advice.PS. I am going to ba asking the same question for Bangalore as well so if you have any suggestions for there it would be great also. (mods I hope this is ok as it is not strictly a double post but let me know if it's not ok)Thanks heaps |

Which station in Chennai? I am guessing the Central Station -there are some small hotels if you turn out of the front entrance, turn left, then walk back up the side of the station, but they are all budget hotels, rather basic, and probably not what you are looking for. The nearest ones you might like are all clustered just south of Egmore station, around Kennet Lane. A few more north of Egmore, on EVR Periyar High Rd. You'll probably need a rickshaw from Central to there anyway, so you may as well choose a hotel you really like from your guide book and go there.

Thanks for your response TM and a very good question. I'm not sure myself but I am guessing the Central Station also
The Egmore area sounds good. We are hoping to book prior to arrival but I am having trouble finding places in the area with websites or even email addresses. Can you suggest any names for me tolook into? |

New Woodlands is possibly one of the nicer reasonably-priced hotel. Would fit your budget when I last looked --- but I last looked a while ago!
MAS is the code for Chennai central, if that helps... |

Heheh. You could use the successfulness of those conversations and/or their managing to make you feel welcome as something of a preliminary guide to where you might like to stay, perhaps.* Good luck with it
![]() * (Just as an example of this, this won't be the kind of place you're looking for, probably, but anyway when I was advising someone on a budget place there, here's his report on some tel. conversations to there & his interpretation of them, from Australia indeed, btw: Taj Regency / Broadlands Lodge. I don't know about Oz btw, but calling India over a landline from The Netherlands is not at all expensive anymore.) The New Woodlands btw is easy to find on the web of course: http://www.newwoodlands.com/. |

These 2 were good places in 2002:
New Victoria - 3 Kennet Lane (200 m from station), T8253638, F8250070. 51 a/c rms, multi-cuisine rest, bar, sat-TV, an ideal business hotel, spacious, quiet, restaurant good value (excellent Lido breakfast), bar, quiet, generally good service, ask for ‘rupee tariff’. Raj Residency - 2 Kennet Lane, T8212214/8212219 F8312364/65. 72 rms with balcony, bar, veg rest, shopping and crafts, credit cards acc, car parking, recently opened, spacious. The first was more expensive. |
