WOW, all the capitals are hurting my eyes.
Typing in capitals is normally meant to show that you are shouting, a few days shopping in Chennai and you will be screaming. ![]() I see from you're profile that you like colours and fashion, have a look at the following photo by Jorge Reverter. http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...g/sort/1/cat/2 |

Sorry, no, not enough to comment on shopping, Anna Salai (Mount Rd.) looked like a good place to start.
There are a few members from Chennai who will likely give better info. Another alternative in the south is Bangalore; it looked to be a good place for shopping, though I'm only giving a first impression, as I don't shop much in India. |

I am the answer to your prayers,
I am not from Chennai but lived there for 6 years and recently went back to visit relatives. Chennai is good for silk sarees, South Indian Jewellery, handloom fabrics, leather goods (its India's "Leather city"), sandlewood figures, Tanjore paintings (sometimes getting a Tanjore painting is easier in Chennai than in Tanjore), and all the other basic stuff you can get in every city like Pashmina, Kashmiri stalls etc The best places to go are: 1. Spencers Plaza---the Ultimate best place for the visitor and the seasoned traveller to Chennai...its your one stop shop for everything! 2. Alsa Mall and Cisons Complex--has great salwar khameez shops, mostly owned by north indians 3. T.Nagar, Panagal Park-these areas are where the "locals" go for their shopping, The ultimate place for silk sarees is Kumaran Silks, tell them Madhuri sent you, the money I spent in their store let them add on that third floor..hahaha...Also Nalli Silks is alright, Naidu Hall, for jewels..(another thing I spent alot on) try Prince Jewellers or Lalitha or Vummidi or GRT. The roads are crowded..its difficult to cross the street here be prepared when you go there,,,its messy but you can find some wonderful stuff 4.The usual suspects ---Lifestyle, Shoppers Stop, Globus---they have these in every city...its up to you if you want to get it in Chennai 5.Fountain Plaza--there is this place called the Bindi Shop...the entire store dedicated to bindis (the thing we Indian women wear on our foreheads), some very beautiful and elaborate ones and some simple ones. They also have henna stuff 6.Pompuhar's on Mount Road--great for handicrafts and figurines. Good thing is they are govt. regulated so the price is kept in check. 7.Kalpa Druma--again a more upscale version of Pompuhar's.mainly for tourists....lovely stuff..they dont cheat though...but the prices are higher here...I love to go and look at stuff Hope this helps a bit...if you need any other info on Chennai....message me! I crown myself the authority on the city! lol |

let me give you more details about my expectations first I going for almost shopping I included it into my india trip because of a friend from there whos currently living in london..He basicallly talked me into it. his first argument is that chennai is very nuch less expensive than mumbay and that if we go there his friends will take of us-taking us to us to private shopping -spree...so very tempting isnt it??? no fear of getting lost in this big city and the assurance of getting to the good shopping places ...all of this took away my reluctance...bearing in mind that it is my first trip to india so now you must be wondering what the fuss,, I have at hand all the help I need...well that s the hic??? :thats where I need help helpsmili I am a western woman who love india clothes,,obvioulsly I can really do with wearing very traditonnal clothes so I get away with a blend of the two cultures called INDO-WESTERN STYLE and ETHNIC JEWERLY. HAVE U HEARD OF IT??? it s the new thing now in fashion-addicted people in india( escpecially in big cities..i believe) SO basically that s what I m after..ans my friend`s friends dont really know about it would you know anything abt it? so far I found one boutique that sells them here the link. http://www.ritukumar.com/label_subsection.htm (the label collection is excatly what I am after) check out the jewerly...my taste... theyhave a store in chennai ( here this address) http://www.ritukumar.com/boutiques.htm but so far that s all I found>> and obviously that s the top of the range any others shop and do you think that I would find this style in the streets-mainsteam or in any shopping center ???? if you want to check out my other thread called "indian fashion "to see pictures of the type clothes I am after indian fashion check it out>> and tell me what u think thanks for your precious help ![]() |

Silk Wars....
Kumarans? Nahhh... Nalli Silks Hey, visit them both, plus the several other HUGE silk shops around Panegal Park (T. Nagar). Watch out for the fabric by the yard. Nalli has a great little department on the left on the ground floor which is really easy to miss, where you can raw silks, tussar silks, all sorts, by the yard. A little lower on the price scale for stuf like Salwar Kameez (kits, they or an outside taylor will make them up to fit you) is Luz. A couple of nice shops on Royapettah High road just North of Luz Church Road ...and it doesn't have the unrelenting crowds and begars of T. Nagar. Spencer Plaza has Heaps of gift shops (about 90, I'm told!) run by Kashmiris. They are very easy to find... "Come, my friend, see my shop: please, just looking!" Some, however, specialise in Jewelery and you can find lovely stuff at all price ranges from cheap artificial stones to very precious! A string of emeralds or rubies to go arond your neck is not as expensive as you might think! Others specialise in carpets or shawls. If you are looking for a silk carpet or cashmere or pashmina shawl then visit several shops before you buy. ...from my small experience of Chennai shopping so far. Enjoy!

Veronique....we both have the same avtar....
Listen..chennai is great place for shopping...depends on what u want to buy also. For silk - got to nallis, Kumaran, Pothy's, Sundari Silks. All these places are in T. Nagar For Jewellery - go to GR Thamgamaligai, Vummidiyars, Prince Jewellers, Lalitha Jewellerys in T. Nagar. For Ethnic Indian handicrafts go to Auroshika on Cathedral road For Ethnic Indian paintings for to Vinyasa Art Gallery - TTK Road ( Royapetah High Road side ) For Indian Handicrafts go to Kalpadruma on R. K. Salai For all things, ethnic, Indian, modern, Leather and for gift items...go to this shopping complex called Spencer Plaza on Mount Road. If is a mall with all kinds of shops. It is many branded retail outlets like Pantaloon, Westside..and many other foreign brands....it will be a wise thign to go there. Also, if u want to mix with crores of Indian..go to Ranganathan Street in T. Nagar. But, eb careful will your purse and handbad, u may get picked. Also, wear shoes, coz it is possible that other people may stamp ur feet. Also...for books and Indian music and other gift items - you can go to Landmark on R. K. Salai. Since u anyway plan to go to Chennai, visit Mahabalipuram...which is a World Heritage site. it is about 43 kms from Chennai. On the way to Mahabalipuram, you can have lunch at Fishermans Cove or MGM Resort. These are by the beach...and have great food. If u need any more info, pls get back to me. |
