Savera Hotel: New Year's Party Tragedy

The dance stage for the New Year's Eve party at Savera Hotel, a major hotel here in Chennai, was (in violation of rules, apparently) built over the swimming pool.

Shortly before midnight it collapsed. One person is dead, others are in a critical condition in hospital.

Criminal charges are being brought against the hotel, but it remains to be seen whether or not this news item is ever allowed back into the light of day again.

By coincidence, I was attending a function there only the day before. (three cups of tea and a cake, BTW, cost over Rs500.). It seems that the hotel refused to make any refund to those who had bought tickets to the event. Protesters were dispersed by the police (that means with sticks). Now I truly know the meaning of the saying to add insult to injury --- even to pile more injury on top of that.

Deepest condolences to the families of the dead, and sympathy to the injured and shocked.

The loss of my business will cost them nothing: I've been there twice in ten years, and never as a resident. But my avoidance will now be positive, rather than passive. I will never ever recommend them, or even mention them again if asked for Chennai hotels.

Criminal. And all too common.

I have a hard time keeping my family away from crowded events and movie halls. And when I go there with them, am irritating them by pointing out severe shortcomings in safety arrangements and construction.

Life is cheaper in India. And justice dearer.

We will read about corruption and bending of rules for a day or two, and then this story will die out, as usual.

I dont think criminal case registered against them is going to effect the owners...Anyway we should learn to be careful...

the money was returned the following day (Jan1st) i know this from a friend who was there at that time.
Even more tragic is that 2 more people succumbed to their injuries.
They "arrested" the event manager and the owner of the hotel, then bail was posted at 1am and the owner was released.
I see the police not allowing any more parties for new years' again!
