Hi all, I've been visiting this forum for a while but this is my first post.
I'm travelling to Chennai in January to attend a month long Tamil language course at the Institute of Asian Studies out in Sholinganallur, then I'll be staying on for an additional week to do some sightseeing and attend to other business. During my course I'll be staying on/near the campus, but for my final week I was planning to move into the city itself so it's easier to get around to different places. Can anyone recommend a nice, clean (very important!) guest house / hotel that's reasonably central for transport links etc? My priority is somewhere that feels safe for a lone, young female without much solo travel experience (I have been to South Asia before, but only with my husband), with places to eat nearby or its own restuarant so I don't have to trek miles in the evening to get a bite, and somewhere that's friendly so I don't feel awkward being there by myself in the evenings. I would be willing to pay up to 1000rps a night (but less if possible!). WIFI or an internet cafe would be a great bonus, but I realise this wish list is getting long and perhaps out of my price range! Thanks so much for any help and advice you can offer. |

Hi Deej.
I agree with ISN. New Woodland can be one of the options. However it is priced at 1400 Per day and is centrally located. You can also try Hotel Parthan which is just about 1045 located in T>Nagar close to shopping and also in the centre of the city. You can take the City tour and also the hop on hop off tour depending on your interests. With no offence to Steering's suggestion, I would not recommend any place near the Egmore or Central Stations as its not safe for single women. You may write to us closer to the date of travel and we can give you more useful info and also I can give you some contacts of lady IMers who are currently in Chennai and you can check out their first hand experiences. Would also let you know if any Chennai Meetup is happening around that time. Prasad or Nick would let us know. Raghu Quote:

Hi,
After some great advice on another thread and from the Institutue of Asian Studies, I have decided to stay at Mamallapuram during my time at the Institutue, then move into Chennai for my final week (provisionally 7th - 13th February). Hopefully if there's a meet up when I'm around I'll come along. Thanks for the words of welcome ![]() |

Ram Guest House on Lloyds Road, Royapettah, is a lower budget alternative to New Woodlands

I've been doing some research about transport to the Institute if I was to stay in Chennai for the whole of my visit, and have found that several buses heading out to Chemancherri, depart from Adyar Bus Stand. As other threads have said that this is quite a nice area I would consider staying here for convenience (as it's on the right side of Chennai so would presumably avoid some congestion of travelling fron the city centre itself).
Am I right in my presumption that Adyar is a nice, safe area? Are there plentiful places to eat, buy bottled water, internet cafes etc? Is it fairly easy to get into central Chennai itself for sight seeing etc. Does anyone know of a good guesthouse / hotel matching my OP requirements within walking distance (up to 20 minutes) of the Adyar Bus Stand? Or if anyone knows of any homestays in the area that would be brilliant (to practice the Tamil I will hopefully be learning!) Thanks |

You can check the Saturday edition of times of India Chennai option to look for accomadation options in or near Adyar. You would find housing mostly in Classifieds and the Property supplemet here: http://epaper.timesofindia.com//?
You can also check sulekha.com for guest houses and PG accomadation if you like. Quote:

Adyar is fine, yes, in fact, quite posh to very posh!
Plenty of shops and eating places. Places to stay, I don't know, but one of our members will. Budget? |
