I'm not going to 'out' my supplier by naming them, but it is possible to buy wine under the counter in Chennai. Try this riddle: Opposite to dark, opposite the Park. Or just pm me!

Gertie

Not able to PM you.. no permissions..

So any more clues for the riddle...

I love to buy quality wine in Chennai

"So would it be better to bring it from Europe? Or will it be confiscated by the customs? How much is allowed?"

2 bottles but I take 3 and the only time I was checked I just told them I was giving it to my Indian supervisor. That was appreciated..

Just to clarify, Tamil Nadu does not allow any alcohol to be sold that is not produced in Tamil Nadu. And since the state doesn't have any wineries, they do not sell it legally. Same goes for Smirnoff, Bacardi and all the other foreign liquors. The only exception are the five star places where they impose a ridiculously high 'luxury tax'. It really sucks!!!

Yes correct. It is not legal to sell imported wine in Tamil Nadu and it is not legal to drive on the right side of the road, It is also not legal to cut across the yellow lines, and it is not legal to stop on the pedestrian crossing zebra lines..

Phew ! If only laws were meant to be followed ! Sigh !

ok I really need a glass of wine today

Yes going to Pondy or Bangalore and bringing back a month's load is currently second on my list.

The first is of course to get a vendor right here in chennai !

Is that going to be a pipe dream after all

...But it's only necessary to go as far as Pondicherry!

That's less travelling than many Brits do to buy their wine across the channel in French supermarkets !

DO you think we can get any of the wines described in this article here in Chennai?

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/30/di...pagewanted=all

Gertie / UbiqMike and other folks with info on how to source decent wine, how do I get in touch with you?

If your sources are decent, maybe we can have a wine club in Chennai!

Thanks
