Tue, Thu, Fri crowd will be more since college students are permitted to visit the factory and naturally they will visit the museum also. Villivakkam is the nearest railway station - 1Km from RRM, Anna nagar station is not functioning now due to metro railway work. direct bus available from chennai central 71E - stop gandhi nagar and walk for 5 mts.
Thanks for the detailed info. Much appreciated.
I had plans to visit on Friday. I guess I'll have to manage with the crowd till it gets too much to handle...

If so, your response to a few questions would be much helpful.

Q1: What is the closing time? In one page it says 5PM, in another it says 6PM. But then for such govt museums, it does not matter what the website or the notice boards indicate - so what is the typical closing time?

Q2: How much time would be reasonable to visit the entire museum? My kid is crazy about trains & we spent about 2-3 hrs at Nagpur, Howrah & Mysore Rail Museums - would this take more or less time?

Q3: Is it crowded in general? Is it likely to be very crowded on a Friday afternoon in May 1st week? Is it usually on the radar for school group visits?

Q4: Do they allow you to get in the engines/coaches & take snaps of interiors? Nagpur/Mysore was tourist friendly, but Howrah was not, just want to prepare myself for the experience.

Q5: What is the best way to reach this place from the vicinity of Central Station? We might be leaving around 2-3PM. I'm fine with trying the suburban train for a different experience. From Google-Maps, I can see the closest station is Anna Nagar West. But the RRM site suggests Villivakkam as nearest station.
As per the wikipedia suburban rail network, it seems Anna Nagar West station is connected to Chennai Central, but erail link for Chennai Suburban - http://erail.in/ChennaiSubUrbanTrains.htm - does not list this station at all. Can anyone confirm based on actual usage?

Q6: What transport options are available to return from the museum to Central Station vicinity in the evening? How much would be the typical fare for an Auto? I know I'll be ripped off anyway, but it would be good know by what margin

Thanks in advance for your inputs.
My answers based on my visit:

A1: It is open till 6PM. There is a last toy train ride at 5PM & things start to slow down after that. Considering the time it takes to look around, 5:30PM may get you in, but you may not enjoy it.

A2: One can budget 1.5 to 2 hrs to cover the entire place. This would include climbing into every coach that is open & taking snaps, visiting the gallery, watching the demo train runs, toy train ride, visiting the tunnel one more time & having something to drink at the small canteen at entrance.

A3: It was not crowded at all on Friday evening. In fact, when I asked for the Toy Train tickets at entrance, the guy was not sure if there are enough people to make the run. But when they announced the toy train run, the coaches were almost full!!! Still, one can expect to see the items without any disturbance...

A4: Except for a few that were locked, most of the coaches are open. Some have proper steps to bring up, while others can be got in with a bit of self-motivation. You can take pictures of whatever you want, no issues.

A5: We took an auto from opp Rippon Bldg & paid 150 rs + 10 rs tip. The person at the museum canteen confirmed that 150 rs is the ideal fare. Besides this, there are many buses on this route, but we did not want to wait for that.

A6: The best option to return by bus was to walk to the nathamuni theatre & get a bus going to central. However, my wife had to buy shoes, so we went by Auto to Anna Nagar Round Tana & paid 50 rs.
