There is a place called Tada Falls (technically, falls in AP). Its a good place for trek which culminates in a waterfall. Only problem is the amount of garbage(In form of broken liquor bottles).

Although there are a lotta families coming there, wouldn't recommend it for women as only trekking enthusiasts and groups of drunk people complete the entire trek to reach the waterfall.
Families usually don't go till the extreme end.

That common tip of mine: Get a hold of Outlook Traveller's Weekend Breaks From Chennai, http://traveller.outlookindia.com/bookhome.aspx. Good guidebooks, inexpensive, easily availabe in India. Take note of their publishing dates in terms of practical data, but the general info will still be good.

You'll know about Kanchipuram, btw?

thanks mave and machadinha for your replies. Yes, I've been to Kanchipuram a couple of times too, so that too is not one of the options.

Noted the outlook traveller suggestion (now why I didnt think of that earlier!).

Regarding Tada Falls, since my wife will be with me - so this too is ruled out.

But nonetheless thank you guys again for taking time out to reply.

Yelagiri, I hear, is a quiet hill resort. Mind you, its outside the radius of 100-150 Kms, but considering that its close to the Bangalore-Chennai highway, access is good. Caveat - I have not been there yet.

..Pulicat lake. Just over an hour (in reality will take atleast two). Boating and there's a bird sanctury too and if you venture early enough (mid feb) there should be migratory birds ...
