Music Shop?

I'm headed to Chennai next Friday for a six-month work assignment. Preparations are underway and the packing list is nearly complete, but I'm stuck on whether or not to bring my own guitar.

Travelling with it is no problem, since I have a hard case. But it seems like bringing my own would be more hassle than it's worth if I would be able to pick up a used one at a music shop for Rs5000 or so.

Anyone have any ideas as to whether it's the kind of thing I could get in Chennai? During the long, hot months, I can't imagine being without one...

You can certainly buy a guitar here.

I don't know if the shops would have any second-hand.

There are numerous music shops here. The two that I use are on Royapettah High Road, near Mylapore: Sruti Laya and Sapta Swara. They both sell Western as well as local instruments, the latter is a much bigger showroom and has just been refurbished. They are almost opposite each other so easy to find.

Where did you end up staying?

Thanks for the tip Nick. I think I'll wait to see how my baggage allowance shapes up to make the final decision, but I am glad to know that I could pick one up there if I don't bring mine.

Thanks for asking about accommodation. We'll be at the Trident, at least at the outset. If my concerns about the peripheral location are justified after a month or so, we'll endeavor to find different accommodation at the same budget.

Looking very much forward to departure and perhaps to an IM meetup in Chennai.
