I always wondered that too! And reflected on the fact that the world must be full of people who do not know that Iyengar is a Tamil Brahmin caste name.

Reflect though, that these names, in previous generations, were routinely appended to personal names, so the originator was, I guess, Iyengar. I have no idea if it was he who applied his name to the system --- but we certainly do have other members who know its history.

Funny I never thought of it that way. True, Iyengar is a Tamil Brahmin caste name, but i guess in this case the "yoga" got its name from the founding member of the "style"

Anywho, from what i have read and called around, there only seems to be one "Dr" who is qualified to take the courses and he is in Indira Nagar, which is too far from where I stay making convenience a big issue.

Therefore Stocklotgarmet, I would love to have the list of classes you recommend in anna nagar

Ciao ciao!

Actually Nick, your guess is absolutely right! "Iyengar Yoga" is a form of yoga that follows the techniques put together by one 'Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar', where Iyengar is just his surname. It is actually not a completely new school of yoga; rather it is a form of the popular Hatha yoga, but what sets it apart is the use of supporting props (belts, blocks etc) while doing the yoga postures, which makes it a bit easier for most. Since the man was popularly known as simply Iyengar, his students had begun to term the techniques as 'Iyengar Yoga' and the name stuck. Of course, this yoga has no caste, nor does it prevent non-Iyengars to practice it

@Maitri: Unfortunately, I couldn't find out any other Iyengar Yoga Teachers in Chennai except the "Dr" in Indira Nagar, who is apparently a student of BKS Iyengar himself. But in case you find an easy way to commute to Indira Nagar, his address is:
Dr Krishna Raman
10 12th Cross Street, Indira Nagar
Chennai- 600 020, India, Tel 490 0980
Email: krish@vsnl.com.
Perhaps you can ask him if he gives classes in places other than Indira Nagar.

Hi Ambler,

All I can say is so far so good. The amenities at the Anna Nagar branch are very good. The interaction with the teachers is almost one to one (I think this also depends on the time you go). The cost of the course includes a mat and a uniform

They have props etc in place if required. After the 1st week the class goes on for a good hour. During the first week they tend to strain you less.

Now I did learn Iyengar's method while I was in Mumbai under a qualified trainer. The difference I feel is that Iyengar concentrates on how to breathe pre, during and post each asana. Here there does not seem to be such concentration on the breath. However the asanas taught are vigorous and equally enjoyable.

Where do you practice yoga? Are you in Anna Nagar?

Cheers,
maitri

A Few recomendations

Guys,

Its been more than 6 months of trying various forms of yoga and here are my two bits:

1. Asana Adiappan is good but not in a class sort of way. its more like you come and do the exercises that they've taught you and there is an instructor to monitor your progress. I am more of a class sort of person so this was not the best method for me. That said they are fairly hands on and provide good instructions.

2. Chennai Yoga Mission: I've recently joined their center. Its a bit power yoga type, but the good this is that its a full 1 hr class. So the instructor walks you through asanas or breathing rather than leaving you to do it yourself. I rather like that Their prices are not sky high and they even have home services if you wish to pay a little more.

Cheers,
m
