Hi Shimsila,
Probably the must see in Madras for an spiritual traveller is "The Teosophique Society" in Adyar 3 Km south of Madras, following the coastline. Probably you know things about people like: Madame Blavattski, Annie Besant, Charles Leadbeater, Alice Bailey and especially Krishnamurti. The history of the Teosophique Society are in part their own histories. Jorge |

Theosophical Society is more of philosophical.
Parthasarathi Temple and Kapaleeshwara temple are good places to explore more spirituality (ofcourse, hinduism way of spiritual) |

The little church on St.Thomas Mount..
One of Jesus's deciples made it all the way to Chennai and lived there for years. This church has some relics and a stone carving apparently chiselled by another deciple (Luke?). |

While in Mylapore: Kapaliswara temple.
Eliots Beach is nicer than marina beach. Try to see some performance of South Indian Classical Music (The Hindu newspaper has listings every day). Spencer Plaza to see how India does big shopping centres. The big sari shops in T Nagar. (ahh, I seem to be overlooking the 'spiritual' aspect!) |

finish off chennai quickly and take the trip to pondicherry!
jokes apart, one interesting aspect of chennai are the old buildings ( dont know how many are interested in them ). chennai has a lot of interesting old buildings . look for a chennai guide and go around looking for them ( sorry, i dont think you will get architecture cruises like in chicago etc ) you may be also interested to explore the unique shopping areas & eateries, dont forget to get into some of those huge saree shops. the theosophical society is worth a visit. depends on what your bend of mind is, anyway. |
