Smile HP Sauce..

I tried HP sauce on Vegit instant mashed potato mix. Quite good. But as a vegetarian I find the slightly BBQ smell rather off-putting. Haven't tried it on Chips/French Fries. So, who else likes this very British condiment? Nick???

Eating " Vegit instant mashed potato mix " that would make you a chemical-tarian, good to see you are keeping an i eye on healthy intake.

Fried eggs, bacon, sausages, black and white pudding and HP sauce. Now you're talking!
Ragaiyre, if you don't like the slightly barbecue taste in the standard HP definitely don't go near their 'Smokey Barbecue' version of the same sauce.

Frankly, I love HP sauce, and I'm veg, too. BUT, if you're put off by the bbq smell, you might just love tamarind chutney, as I'm pretty sure it's just about the same thing.

I don't think an Iyer will be even talking that lot, let alone eating it!

Is a prig with remorse really still a prig? I have to admit that the very first sentence of the link I posted earlier says "sometimes known as Worcester sauce." You're in the clear!

On the other hand, I do get to go all high dudgeon on you for not checking the link (no one ever seems to do with my links) and finding the very words that would allow you to stick it to me.

Here's the link again – though fat lot of good it will do:

Worcestershire sauce

Not all of it isn't Worcester sauce.

I thought I might have done one better by checking the bottle!

As for Sainsbury, what do they know? . I bet Waitrose don't get the name wrong.

Unless, of course, Lee and Perrins (or Heinz as now own it) have their Worcestershire sauce trademarked?

I challenge the hfots ...to pronounce it!

I refuse to drive 20 odd miles each way to the nearest Waitrose just to see what they call their sauce.

The late Alan Coren once said " As far as I know Sainsbury's exist to keep the riff-raff out of Waitrose."

ADD - According to the Waitrose website they sell Worcester Sauce flavoured crisps. That's definitely morally downhill.

Former British PM Harold Wilson loved Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce, but his wife told the press that he drizzled HP over anything and everything (edible that is). Apparently there seems to be a class thing here, with HP being the condiment of the masses and Worcestershire a more upper-class thing. Nick, you have polished tastes. Sorry If I mentioned your name in full, received a warning from the admin!! :-(

Next up on my 'To Taste list', 'Branston pickle'. Cheedar cheese and pickle sandwich.
