You can take the local train from Egmore to Tirusulam Station, and once you get down at Tirusulam you reach Airport. No need to come out of Egmore Station. Else negotiate with a Autorickshaw who will be waiting to rip you off.
Ravi ....
THANKS rsk. I shall be obliged if you can please answer some more questions.
Since I would be having luggage, I wonder if I can take the local train to Tirusulam Station as it would be crowded?
How long does it take from Egmore to Tirusulam Station? How far is the airport from Tirusulam Station?
How far is Egmore station to Airport?
How much would it cost by auto from Egmore to airport?
Is there any pre-paid auto or taxi stand at Egmore station?

Curious_man123 it is about 17 kms from Egmore to Airport. It will take about half hour on road to reach the airport from the station. That is assuming there are no major traffic snarls along the way. I believe that there are prepaid autos in front of the station, not sure how much it will cost.

What time are you landing in Chennai. Depending on that I can tell you if the trains to Egmore will be crowded or not
How long does it take from Egmore to Tirusulam Station? How far is the airport from Tirusulam Station?
It takes exactly 27-30 Minutes by train. Its got to cross 8 Stations and the ninth station is Egmore. From Airport its exactly 5 - 6 minutes walk to tirusulam station. You dont need to even cross the road. There is a Subway from the airport end directly into the railway station
How far is Egmore station to Airport?
16.3 Kms
How much would it cost by auto from Egmore to airport?
Prepaid Taxis should cost you something around 300 - 350 Rs
Prepaid Autos are not there in the Airport Currently
Regular autos will ask you for atleast 200 to 250 Rs and again it depends on the time you are here. Early morning and late nights the autos are too costly
Is there any pre-paid auto or taxi stand at Egmore station?
Yes, There is a Prepaid Auto at Egmore Station.
With Warm Regards

That is very optimistic unless it is in the middle of the night!I would allow more than one hour by road. Prasad gives us the train timing of around half an hour --- and trains do not have traffic problems!

The Local train takes 2.3 to 2.5 minutes per station and it stops only for 20 seconds in stations. Calculating all this I said, it will take 27 - 30 minutes to reach Egmore. Moreover, the trains are more faster after the guage conversion.
hey guys, i m also travelling to chennai, for the first time, and that too without company. I am landing at 8.25 am at the airport and wish to travel to Egmore. I have these questions:
I wanted to know how reliable are the local(suburban) trains? At this hour of the day, is it too crowded in the trains?
What is the frequency of the suburban trains to Egmore?
Is the suburban system, one like of the Mumbai, coz i have a good experience travelling in Mumbai.
if i just walk to Tirusulam station from the airport is it as simple as getting a ticket and boarding the train in a matter of 5-10 mins after punching the ticket?
OR the best option would be to take a pre-paid taxi to Egmore. I am staying at the Hotel Pandian, Kenneth Lane outside of Egmore station. Anyone stayed there before? Is it good.

Pandian at kenneth lane has been frequently used by a lot of Indiamikers. Never heard a complaint as of this moment.
8.25 AM is a peak time for train traffic towards egmore. Highly preferable to hire a pre-paid taxi....Please check if they are going to give you a black taxi. Dont take that. Can breakdown anytime and they drive like hell.
Try contacting Akbar travels and other travels. There are more than 3 or 4 travels near the exit.
But for the crowd at the time, the system is all same in the chennai suburban train. Get to the counter and take a ticket and you can walk to the platform. We dont have a ticket punching system here.

Thank you very much for the valuable info, bsprasad. I think I then better take a pre-paid taxi. I still was a bit curious whether even the first class compartment of the local trains would be crowded to the extent of not being able to get in at Tirusulam or get down at Egmore?
Is it the equivalent of the Mumbai suburban peak hour crowd(if anyone here has experienced it)?
Just trying to evaluate. Thanks.
It is not equivalent to Mumbai...You can try taking a first class ticket and you will relatively not crushed, but what about your huge luggages.
Can you pull them with you even with the minimal crowd. Think about it. If you can, then you can walk across the GST road (Take the Subway) to the railway station and get yourself issued a first class ticket to Egmore and you are good to go.
Tirusulam is relatively less crowded station and hence you shold not have any problem getting in the first class compartment. Try it if you are ok carrying your luggages.
