Hotel/ Guesthouse in Chennai?

hey folks,

just a quick question:

can anyone tell me the name of a safe, clean, reasonably cheap hotel/ guesthouse in chennai?

i've used a super greasy little place in pudupet in the past but i would like something with a little charm and that is safe for my belongings.

any thoughts?

It depends on your budget, but I like New Woodlands hotel on Radhakrishna Salai. It is a bit old, but the cottages have charm. And it's in the middle of the city, so you are not far away from anything.

If you really want cheap I should think the [in]famous Broad Lands might be hard to beat.

Otherwise I really have no idea about the 2oo-ish bracket. Although I guess they exist, I get the impression that cheap-guest-house accommodation doesn't come as cheap here as in some of the Northern cities.

Can give you a couple of names in Mylapore area at the 500-ish rate if you want, but the cheaper rooms at New Woodlands are probably not very much more.

When are you coming? It makes a big difference as to whether or not you can stand it here without AC!

thanks mirjamd.

hey nick..... good to hear from you.

what i really need first and foremost is safety for my belongings..... reasonably cheap comes second. charm can be fun but unnecessary.

i'll be there in 3 weeks and will be hanging around southern motors (#8/1
State Bank Street Anna Salai) for a few days until the paperwork is sorted. will you have time for a brew?

A hotel I like on Anna Salai (close to Gemini flyover) is Inn Chennai. Their prices are very reasonable for the quality of the rooms you get. And your belongings will be safe. They have a safe for anything you want to keep especially safe.

A single room costs Rs. 2600, including breakfast.

Cyber, of course I'll have time for a brew, although we are doing a bit of house-hunting just now which may mean going backwards and forwards to Alleppey again around then. Keep in touch.

The guest houses I know about are under or around Rs1,000 (AC). I used to pay about 750 at Ram Guest House in Royapettah: entirely safe and secure, as well as being clean!

Actually I'd advise AC at any time of year: even in December the humidity at night makes one feel like you're trying to get to sleep under water!

nice work nick

i'll add it to the top of the list.

on the ac front. i've always felt that ac could make one sick with a cold but maybe that's just an old wives tale

alleppey....? very nice! i'll defenitaly drop a line when i'm in the hood. always good to hook up with the veterans.

good luck in the hunt!

I think that AC used judiciously can make life here a lot more comfortable, but over-use is bad. Just gives me a headache, for a start.

But exactly how much is over-use is a frequent bone of contention between me and Mrs N!

In Chennai especially the meaning of everything changes so be more specific on what you want to the point of breaking it down to its components!

Brew would mean beer in other places but here it is good old tea.

And my advice would be to avoid places which would serve the same thing what you would get in Europe as then the purpose of coming all the way to Chennai/India gets defeated.

Happy hunting/eating/drinking/sleeping.

Actually, It is very likely to mean tea in England too!

And, being the chai addict that I am, that was what I understood it to mean!
