Hindi classes in Chennai?
Does anyone know of any Hindi classes being held in Chennai?
I've heard that there are some Gov. operated schools, for adults (promoting Hindi language and all that), but I don't know other details and whether foreigners can attend. Anyone heard of these or any other courses? I kept thinking I'll pick up Hindi as time goes by, but it didn't happen yet....so I'm thinking of putting some effort into it. So far books haven't helped much! Yes, and living in Chennai certainly doesn't help either ![]() |

![]() People speak it in my house ... people speak it on the national TV channels also. And there are many people in Chennai who have traveled or lived up north, and they too speak Hindi. So it's far from being useless, even in Chennai. Moreover, I have no interest (& patience) or much use for Tamil. |

It won't get you far on the street ---although an increasing number of people know it, many do not. It is taught in schools: my nine-year-old neighbour speaks very good English, but she tells me she has no interest in her Hindi lessons.
But if it is the mother-tongue of your family then that is reason enough and more...

if u plan to live in chennai
ifu plan to live in chennai for few more years , it is better to learn tamil than hindi ..
hehe tamil people hate hindi .... they are traditional knit with the language ! But incase if u want to learn hindi ..then best thing is dakshina bharat hindi prachar sabha as quoted here in replies by some member . Generally people finishing all exams from prachar sabha ...are eligible to teach hindi for students in their houses or institutions . You can look for someone in your living who is authorised by hindi prachar sabha to teach hindi . ciao |

Come on, I've been living here long enough to know that Hindi won't take me far in Chennai
But as I anyway have little interest in Chennai, I will do just fine with Hindi. There are quite a few people speaking or at least understanding Hindi. Or else what's with the crowds at Sathyam...? A few rikshaw drivers know some broken Hindi and even my vegetable man seems to know bit. They might not USE it or SPEAK it, but they understand a bit alright. And as I said, there are many non-tamil people in Chennai who have lived in many places and who do speak Hindi fluently. But that's not the reason why I wanted to learn Hindi: it's spoken in my family (it's not their mother-tongue, but it's used as that). They just don't have what it takes to teach me (and I also need a bit of school discipline!). Once I learn Hindi, I'll also stop oggling at the TV or some movie without understanding a word. I will try that Dakshina Bharati Hindi Prachar Sabha, thanks for the suggestions ![]() |

Icetea,
I read your post with interest - I have learnt a little hindi and I want to keep up my lessons whilst in Chennai. Did you contact the place mentioned above? Any joy? I am interested in how you got on and any feedback you might have. Cheers, Gertie |

a little off topic, Sorry No offence..
This is the only metro in India where you find people hate their national language.I converse with almost many people(off-course Indian) in California in Hindi but in Chennai, its difficult without Tamil. I understand Tamil is a very rich language and people love it. But you can't turn Chennai into Cosmo city with this. I have seen many of my Northie(people from North india)frnds shifted to B'lore only for this reason. They loved the place, people but language..its always a barrier. Educated people knows English very well, so no problems with communcating with them, but what about less educated people like watchman, vegitable man, etc. They know only Tamil..!! Anyway, Gertie, you will find dakshin bahrtiya prachar sabha a good starting point to learn Hindi. And one more thing I love Hindi..., its my mother tounge.. |

Hi Gertie, no, to my shame I haven't contacted them yet.
T.Nagar is a bit far from my place, so coming/going regularly could pose some problems for me. And having seen the education system here, I fear it's just a man with a stick pointing to a blackboard and making everybody repeat after him. ![]() In case you contact them before I do, I'd also like to hear about it...or else maybe we can check it out together once. |
