Gin
Oh dear
This seems to be getting awfully complicated, as I'm going to volunteer at a school for 5 weeks on my own I just thought it might be nice to have a wee g&t in the evenings, perhaps I'll have to abstain afterall
Everything passes
I remember two gins that i tried in india..
Blue Riband
Gilbey's
They are quite good... add it with little Limca and the taste is heavenly
There must be other brands as well...
and ofcourse you can always get expensive ones like Bombay Saphire in 5 stars...

Oh god, a thread on gin has turned into national/state willy waving
. Well, that's alcohol for you!
I would, personally speaking, prefer not to buy at a TASMAC shop. As I don't drink, it is academic. However, this would be one thing where I would not be able to ask my wife to do the errand; she would refuse. She does not even like to go to some tea shops that I will happily buy tea from if "caught short", but will wait down the road. On TASMAC shops I'd have to agree. They are bloke-ish, in the most unmodernised and unreformed sense of the word. Even in posh areas, they can also be thuggish. I'm sure that googling some of the newspaper sites for TASMAC would produce a few murder stories.
But the practical crux of the matter: you want the product and they sell it? Send a friend! Problem solved
Another problem, though, would be the acceptability of your evening tipple. I suppose you could carry it in a lemonade bottle!

This would give some stores list in Chennai for tonic water made by Schweppes.
Also one could buy imported gin in some of the 5 Star Department stores which would also be stocking tonic water.

typical weegie after the strong stuff
I promise
I'll be culturally responsible about my gin, it will go in my water bottle for transport and will be enjoyed in the privacy of my flat, on my own, after a hard days teaching. And as lone female traveller I don't have anyone to go buy it for me. How sad I sound haha.
Goodness, here we are sharing a thread with a woman that drinks gin in her flat!
Maybe we'll all go to hell now!

Seriously... isn't vodka best for discrete drinking, on account of leaving less trace on the breath?
My grandfather used to cover the smell with peppermints, so, if he smelt of peppermint, we knew what he had been doing --- which was most days, and, sadly, rather more than an evening pick-me-up.
