Gin
Gin
Does anyone know where I could buy a bottle of imported (eg tanqueray, gordons, bambay saphire) in chennai? many thanks.
Everything passes
I dont live in Madras, but a village quite a bit away, hovwever the shops there sometimes have BR in stock, there is nor so much call for it as brandy which seems to be the horrid sweet liquor they drink.
There is a wine shop in Spenser. In the main bit, go up the escalator to the first floor and turn R down a dingy aisle full of touty Kashmiris, at the end on the RHS is the wine shop, or was wine shop when I was last there.
Beware they are very good at trying to overcharge you, saying the prices have just changed or some such, however you can verufy the prices by going to the TASMAC site where they post a list of prices
http://tasmac.tn.gov.in/Mrp.htm.
Enjoy your wee dram
Got a full bottle last time!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately the Liquor divison of Amma Nana and Fairlands opposite the Park Sheraton have closed down. I wouldnt advise you to go anywhere near the goverment operated TSAMAC shops where they sell liquor.
May be if you wish to have a drink of Gin try stepping in to Zara Tapas opposite Chola Sheraton on RK.Salai. Ambience is good.

There is nothing wrong with TASMAC.
What do they charge for a nip of gin in the Zara Tapas? a kings ransom no doubt!
If MC whisky is good enough for Sir Mark Tully to drink, then BR gin is equally pleasant, if that is what you want

Let me post a picture of a Tasmac Shop and then its up to neenypie to go over there or not.
Personally I wont even look in the direction of the Tasmac Shops. disgusting and Awful. I would not recommend it to any Woman atleast, be it Indian or a Foreigner.
Sorry no offences to FSG

@RaghuKumar; I hope you are not presuming that the lady would open the bottle and drink it on the counter?
Chennai liquor retail history dates back only 20 years whereas that is not the case with rest of the free world!

Why drink it there, she cant even buy it. ( thats what I meant ) too crowded and certainly not the place for decent people.
Just a sample picture.

Define decent as the world recognises it ? Going to a legal counter and paying for something is not decent?
By the way Jayalalitha (ex CM) got the Spensor outlet opened just so ladies find it easier to buy !
Also at Pals Anna Nagar(shop no 407) I have seen ladies paying the car service waiters to get them hootch without any untowards!

No offence Ragu.
OP did stipulate BUY!!
Jayalailtaa increased the coffers of TN greatly by 'nationalising' the state sale of liquor.
We foreigners are a funny lot, mind you so are confessed bramins, pure veg who will eat chicken and share your gin, with water.......... ugh, at least Limca, or if not soda and lime with ice of course

Jayalalitha did not nationalise the retail but "statised" Tasmac is state controlled. And I am proud to be an Indian!
Gin with tonic water is still popular in the Old Colonial Clubs!
Tonic and water are 2 entirely different things.
I would call TN a national state within its boundaries, road signs in Hindi are defaced.
Long live the individuality of each Indian state within the whole.
The biggest democracy in the world and may it remain so for ever
