GH/hotel near the US Consulate? Any recommendations
Hi folks
Any recommendations for a decent GH/Hotel..not too pricey not to dodgy to stay for couple nights. Going with my aunt so place needs to be "family" friendly. Any thing close to the US consulate would be preferable. My aunt remembers staying at a place walking distance from the consulate couple years back but she can't remember the name. Before I turn the pages of Lonely Planet thought I would ask here. Cheers Madhu |

I didn't know we had a consulate in Chennai ... never really thought about it!
Edit: Oh, it's on Anna Salai, that's the main shopping area, and close to Triplicane. The Orchid Inn sounds lovely and not very expensive (600-700). I thought there was a good hotel at Anna Salai, maybe Nick knows it.

New Woodlands, just next-door, is lower-end, and I've heard people say that Savera is not worth the extra money!
The Consulate is just by a roundabout/flyover system known as 'Gemini'. If you do want posh, I think there are two five-stars in the vicinity, one on Cathedral Road, one on the Nungambakam side of Gemini. Sadly, the brain cells holding their names have withered. Wikimapia is good for this sort of thing, although you have to sift through a lot of rubbish. I'll come back with links to the consulate in Wikimapia and or GoogleMaps. ..... Wikimapia link Here it is in Google Maps (which is pretty good for Chennai, by the way)

Don't need 5 star. Just clean comfortable and "secure". Just don't want my aunt to have a uncomfortable night before her early morning interview. I can handle anything :-). Thanks in advance.
@Wonderwoman: Soon there will be a US Consulate in Hyderabad. The construction is on its way (seen it) and date of completion is sometime this time next year. Okay have to get back to the TV (watching the no confidence motion drama ) |

there's hotel Ranjit thats a favourite haunt for most visa seekers. New woodlands is Nick's favourite hotel for all ocassions!
which is also a stones throw. further down nungumbakkam high road is Hotel Gautam manor- decent. On mount road- you got yrouself Inn Chennai - a service apartment. There are also hotel palmgrove and hotel arunachalam (which is a service apartment) both of these are on Kodambakkam highroad- walking distance from the consulate. hope this helps.

Those are the Park Hotel and the Chola Sheraton, both within walking distance from the Consulate. The Park is visible from the Consulate, actually. |

Thanks!
Just wanted to say that New Woodlands is pretty nice. Saapad in the restaurant was good. Clean place (inside the room and restaurant)..outside some construction going on but no noise.
Only thing that irritates me in the room is that we have only one plug point...same for the TV and same to charge the phone and laptop. Pretty silly but livable :-) Thanks again. Cheers Madhu |

Single-plug-point rooms.
Very Indian. Common not only in hotel rooms, but in houses too. |
