finding an affordable hotel in or near T-Nagar

A relative(single male aged 29) of mine has an interview at 8am on a Sunday morning in November at The Residency Towers, Chennai
115 Sir Thyagaraya Road, T-Nagar Chennai - 600 017.

Getting a room in that hotel(The Residency Towers) would be the easiest but it is pretty pricey(about 5K/night).

I looked at the list at
http://www.indiamike.com/india-hotel...as-hotels-c88/
but could not find any affordable hotel in that area(T-Nagar) after a cursory glance.

I would appreciate any suggestions on where to look for an affordable place(budget would be around 500-1000INR per day) to stay in T-Nagar or somewhere close where my relative can reach that hotel at 8am on Sunday. He knows Tamil, but is visiting Chennai after some 10 years so is not familiar with the areas at all.

Can someone please advise?

Thanks

Yes, lots of hotels and even guest houses: no need to lay out star-hotel money!

Hi VVV,

I dont think Hotel Peninsula or Partha would come for less than 2000 INR. U can suggest New Woodlands hotel. Details can be found in the below link itself. Its about 1350 inclusive of taxes. Your relative reach Residency Towers within 15 minutes on a Sunday morning. But he would need to make an advance booking over phone atleast to secure the room. Its one of the most comfortable hotels with good restaurants and centrally located for a traveller.

Hi Raghu,

Thanks a lot for the information.

Is Woodlands quite close to Residency Towers? Can he reach there(Residency Towers) by walk or bus in 15 mins from the Woodlands hotel? If by bus, is the bus connectivity that good and frequent between the two hotels on Sunday morning at 7am(as the interview is at 8am) using which he can reach in 15mins?
I have cautioned him to stay away from auto and taxi drivers in Chennai.

Can you please clarify?

Thanks

Woodlands is not in T Nagar, and it is not a quick walk.

The journey would best be made by auto, walking past the sharks that swim by the hotel gate and taking one from just down the road.

I would not advise a man on his way to an interview in a strange city, anywhere, to attempt to negotiate the buses.

(it is New Woodlands Hotel and google should easily find its site if you want to know more)

Thanks, I knew it was in Mylapore, but did not know if Mylapore and T Nagar were adjacent or not so thought walking might be an option.

Well, hearing the stories of autos, I thought of asking him to avoid them altogether. In case there is no option, how far is the distance from WoodLands hotel to the Residency towers in kilometers and what would be the approximate fare in a auto?

Is there a possibility of shared auto, though it may be rare on Sunday morning 7am?

Yes useful advice, I thought if my relative leaves his hotel at 6:30am, he can use the buses to get to his destination by 8am. If he got a hotel in T-Nagar, probably he could do that, but as you suggest that is also risky as one may board the wrong bus or so on. Moreover, the buses may not be that frequent that early on Sunday morning?

In general, how are Chennai buses compared to Mumbai bus service? I know they are certainly less crowded, but are they more frequent or less than Mumbai buses?

I saw that in Hotel Forum and also looked at its website, just did not give its full name "New Woodlands Hotel" while posting

Thanks for your advice and time.

Hi VVV,

Adding to Nick's post, going by bus is not advisable. However the travel time from New Woodlands to Hotel Residency during morning hours on a Sunday is just 15 minutes maximum.

There are plenty of auto rickshaws waiting outside the hotel. They might ask 50 or 60 Rs. being a new comer they might ask for 70 or 80, if your relative knows tamil he can flatly refuse and say that the distance is only 4 kms and 15 minutes of travel why to pay more. The best way is not to take the stand autos, but to take an auto that drops off a passenger.

Since Parthan charges only 1000 Rs. and is located in T.Nagar itself your relative can stay there also. But again its not walkable distance. He would need to go by auto about 50 Rs max.

Hi Raghu,

Thanks for the advice. I will ask my relative to take the autos and advise him to bargain as you suggested.

Thanks again to you and all who responded to me.
