Finding a Short-Term Let

Hi all

Am looking for some advice on how to find a suitable short-term let in Chennai.

I am coming over on June 12 and planning to share an partment with 2 friends while we study Yoga at KYM, leaving about 18 July. So I am looking for a 3-bedroom modern apartment within walking distance of Fourth Cross Street, RK Nagar 600 028. And I need to do the searching online (unless one of you kind Chennaites can help) as I am hoping to have it arranged before we arrive.

So am looking for a little advice n how to find a place - anyone know of good websites, reputable companies or suchlike? Anyone know of such a place? I have seen what seems like agents offering a chance to view/negotiate with landlords for a fee, is this the usual way in Chennai? Any ideas what a reasonable price range would be for a reasonable apartment of this size (no need to be palatial or 5-star, but needs to be clean and modern and in working order)?

All advice is welcome...

Cheers,

Scott

I don't know who is willing to rent out an apartment for such a short period, except for guest houses/corporate apartments. Regular flat owners want long-term tenants and huge deposits so I don't think that there is any use contacting them. Also, given the short-term stay, prices will be well above what is usually charged per month for a long-term rental.

Where is this RK Nagar? Google says it's in RA Puram, so that's a pretty posh area, prices won't be low.

There are online search portals, someone here on IM recently posted a good list: http://indianstudentsnetwork.com/ISN...hread.php?t=53 (apart from these there's also http://www.magicbricks.com that I know of). But, as I said, I don't know of how much use these will be to you for searching a flat for such a short stay.

Maybe you can contact a real estate agent through them, if you don't mind paying for the service. How are you going to arrange this before arriving to Chennai and without seeing the place? (and I presume that you will also need to pay something in advance)

I will check Property Plus from The Hindu and see if there are any such ads for short stays.

In today's Hindu, posh 3 bedroom flats in RA Puram seem to start at 30.000, but these are owners who look for long-term tenants. I checked the guest house section too (it has flat offers for short-term stays) but unfortunately there's nothing much close to that place, only a 1 bedroom flat in R.A. Puram and some offers in Mylapore, which is sort of closer. You might want to consider staying somewhere else and taking a riskhaw to wherever you need to go every day.

Scott, doesn't KYM have a list of apts? They usually do, unless they stopped recommending. When I did the month long, there were two gals who had an apt. for a month that was about a block from KYM....

Yes, Linda, will check that out too. Am just testing the waters to see what the options are right now.

Icetea I agree with what you're saying, it may prove hard and if not impossible then it will be more expensive. But I know peole who have done this in the past, so it is possible. Thanks for checking the Hindu for me, if anyone sees something that might be of interest I'd appreacite a nod

I think you are right about RK Nagar being in RA Puram, it looks right from my map anyway. I tried on Googlemaps to find the route Suresh used to take us to KYM and it was almost impossible. Maybe we'll need to find somewhere further out, but am hoping to avoid auto travel as much as possible (though in June/July weather, that may be foolish!).

It all seems so close now, less than 3 months and BOY do I have a lot of studying to do hahaha

Cheers,

Scott

Ramakrishna Naga is sort-of-in-the-middle-of RA (Raja Analai) Puram.

Anywhere there, plus Mandaveli, Abhiramaouram, Mylapore, should do you nicely.

There is an e-paper version of The Hindu --- every page viewable. Viewing classifieds in a big whole-page graphic download is tedious, but much better than nothing. So check out Property Plus on Saturdays.
