Doctors in Chennai
Are there any expat doctors in Chennai?
Who do you all use for your medical ailments? Not necessarily expat doctors, that was just a question.. GP, eye, ENT, skin, etc, etc All suggestions appreciated, any contact details would be great..

Shall I PM you my doctor's details?
He is Chennai born-and-bred, but, if it helps, he spends some time every year working for the British National Health Service, and I gather he even does teaching there. He also runs the checkup department at Apollo (pretty good deal for a general medical review). His surgery is in Mylapore, near to Vivikananda College. He recommended an ENT guy to me, in Mandavelli. We have a good eye man too, in Adyar. I'll have to dig out some addresses, so, I I haven't let you know within a day or two, please feel free to give me a nudge by PM --- unless it is urgent, in which case do say so on the thread! Of course, someone might beet me to it...

Hi Nick
When I'm in a city which has a British Embassy I normally checkout which doctors and dentists they use. Thanks thro them I got an excellent dentist in Calcutta. I did once go to Appolo and the Indian doctor who treated me had done his degree in Scotland. I would be very interested if you would'nt mind sending a PM to me with the doctor's details you are proposing. I'm in no hurry, not yet sick..touch wood. I have been diagnosed as lazyosis, in an advance stage of idleingytis, with acute symptoms of workophobia, and fearmia of activity. Thanks

Forgot to mention that a great dentist would be top of the line! Anyone? I also was treated at Chennai's Apollo Hospital -- and by Indian doctors. I recommend it -- and them -- without reservation. Not only was the diagnosis careful and exhaustive -- it included a CAT scan -- but the treatment was caring and effective. Registration was quicker than at American hospitals and there was less waiting to see a doctor. Most impressive of all, the cost -- for the examination, the scan, 'bleeding' of a haematoma, and a set of prescription drugs was all of US$40.

I'll ask Mrs. N where we put the file.
Kmalik... He isn't searching; he's asking someone else to search. I'd say that pretty much confirms his own diagnosis! ![]() You can go direct to a private hospital, even for trivial things, but it will be comparatively expensive, perhaps two or three times the cost. Of course, a substantial amount goes to the hospital coffers, as one would expect. One good thing, though, is that all the diagnostic machines, tests, specialists etc will be in the same building. Do not be surprised if the private hospital suggests that you need several! But private doctors will be getting commission from the labs too, so the occasional unnecessary test is something we have to live with. My doctor was a friend of a very good friend, which is a good place to start: I was lucky I could start there! |

The reason I prefer small private clinics is coz I dislike hospitals immensely.
I broke my hand in Guyana quite badly and was put in a hospital in Georgetown with nothing more than my passport. No money, no toothbrush even. I was in shock and they knocked me out for 2 days. When I woke up they asked me to sign a consent form and explained that they are wheeling me into open hand surgery to attach metal rods. Naturally I agreed. Woke up, all fine. Spent 3 or 4 days post operative care with a cast, and flew back to the US. Insurance kicked up a big fuss but no probs all cool. Doctor in the US opens up my cast and to his horror, there was no surgery, no rod and the bone had misjoined. I had a twisted forearm. Insurance kicked up an even bigger fuss and refused to cover a new surgery to break the bone and reattach it with a rod. Drs recommended Mayo Cinic in Boston who are not exactly cheap. Happen to know the people at Apollo, so I went to Chennai where they broke both forearm bones and attached a hideous device called Ilizarov's device. Spent 9 months lugging that thing around with me and at the end of it only had a slight improvement in the deformity and developed a new deformity. The device was not well fitted and ended up with a shortened tendon on one of my fingers due to inactivity. Drs suggested a zplasty surgery to lengthen the tendon, but that would weaken my arm forever to no more than being able to write or type. That was not something I wanted to live with, so I turned it down. Now I have a bad arm and a bad finger that sticks out. This is despite having a very popular bone dr in Apollo who has patients come to him from the farthest corners of India and spend months together in Chennai in hotels getting his treatment. Hate the fellas. So.. The younger drs these days prefer to work for the hospital corporations. Only the (few) older ones keep clinics. I prefer them as they are resistant to the corporatisation of medical care. The good ones are getting thinner on the ground. If you find a good dr with a private clinic you're on gold.. |
