I've watched it a few times when in India but eventually conceded to myself that I had no idea of what the hell was going on .... the same batter can stand up there for hours deflecting, blocking & whacking balls willynilly with that over sized bat in any direction. 'Sometimes' he feels the urge & the energy to run halfarsed up the field & back with his bat trailing behind him like a cat on his ninth life. The uniforms & equipment seem to be leftovers from the Raj period or before & the pitcher can't even get the ball to the batter without bouncing it once on the turf. I couldn't find one cheerleader or beer concession or pretzel vendor (somebody did offer me a cuppa & cucumber sandwich) & the game just goes on & on & on & on & seemingly never ends ...... other than that it was a fun & interesting cultural experience.
We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. ~

I've spent many a happy hour watching Tedulkar whack the Aussies around on Indian TV, but I doubt I'd ever go to a game in person - when they lose the Indians set fire to the stadium! How anyone can take cricket that seriously baffles me. It's not like it's serious like (ice) hockey or football (soccer).
I brake for Maddur vadas.

Well sorry to interrupt you cricket fans but being an Indian and staying in India all my childhood apart from playing roadside cricket that too not much of expert, or rather as a novice, never knew bowling, and batting much,
I really get shocked or become wierd when I see gang of guyz discussing cricket and the matches, Right from childhood I am least interested in cricket and in India with the topic of cricket you can start conversation anywhere in trains, places where you meet people, like two people start discussing and many pop in and make it big discussion, but I dont even know the terms and feel very happy that unlike other guys my time is not wasted in watching cricket, some of my friends , relatives are so die hard fans that they dont miss a second of matches.
Just some days ago there was some match, and i went to flour shop to buy some flour and the shopkeeper commented ur the first bachelor to come to my shop today (evening 6 o clock) he told that since match is going on my shop which used to be crowded at this time, is deserted today, this shows the power of cricket, but I still not yet got interested in this game, I feel very bore watching this game. Rather would see a comedy or horror movie, or sleep which is my favourite timepass.

My guess is that not alot of India newcomers would ever fall head over heels for this game upon seeing it for the first time. Too slow a game, too hot to watch for hours on end, & too many other things to occupy your(all too often) short time there.
As a rule most human sporting preferences/enjoyment comes from playing &/or watching games from childhood - the impressionable years where it really gets into your blood.
....of course, the exception being that some western lady meets a dashing young Indian cricketeer and learns the game interlaced with a bit of romance. This very well could and probably has happened.
