Wow, what an outstanding program! I wish I could be there for even a couple of nights. I just saw one of the scheduled performers, Unikrishnan, about a month ago. I can't get enough Carnatic classical music. SIGH.

Robing, In Chennai you buy The Hindu newspaper. It has a sort-of What's On article every day that will list concerts and dance performances.

iyou, yes, Unikrishnan is a popular performer. I've seen him in London.

Personally my method is totally random; I just go for whatever comes around that's convenient or affordable. I'm unfamiliar with most of the names, and it's not as if I'm going to understand any of the lyrics they're singing anyway I'm going to take a lot of heat for saying this, but to a certain extent it all sounds the same to me. Put it down to being new at it. All I know for sure is that I prefer Carnatic to Hindustani, but I enjoy hearing both.

Go for Iyou's random approach! You'll get nice surprises, see some stuff you don't like so much, and thus find out what you do like!

If I try recommending anyone, then afterwards I'll remember 5 more names I forget to recommend. Then another five....

But Hey!...
Violin: TN Krishnan, MS Gopalakrishnan, Lalgudi Jayaraman, Ganesh & Kumaresh
Vocal Men: Balamuralikrishna, TV Gopalakrishnan, TM Krishna
Vocal Women: Sudha Raghunathan, Nithiasree, Bombay Jayasri
Vina: Vina Jaianthi (don't get many vina players travelling to UK, I'm sure there are many I should know about)
Mridangam: Umialapuram K Sivaraman, Raja Rao, TV Gopalakrishnan, Guruvayor Dorai,

I've mentioned two or three mridangists, and there are many masters of all the S. Indian percussion instruments, but, for me, the hottest and greatest persussion player in the world is master of the Ghatam (clay pot) Vikku Vinayakram.

...Oh, there's a morsing player called Nick H but give me a few years before looking for me in pro Chennai concerts

Venues... Myalapore is the cultural centre of Madras; Music Acadamy (status rather uncertain at the moment?) Bharatyia Vidiya Bhavan, many others.

In february many of the big names are probably resting after Dec/Jan season, or off on tours the US or something, but you may well be lucky.

There are lots of organisations called sabhas (spelling?) promoting concerts, some hire halls, some have their own, some have big halls, some are quite plush. Some are open-air (don't forget the mossie repellant) Concerts go on all over the city.

Check out the Hindu newspaper, get your hotel reception to tell you what is near, what is far and set off on a musical adventure

It did to me at first, too. I still don't understand any of the language, but at least now I usually recognise at least one or two songs in a concert, and can sometimes even put a name to them.

I'd be interested to know why (the preference for Carnatic, that is)?

What heresy! No mention of M.S Subalakshmi! Back to your notes! Lather, rinse, repeat. :-)

I didn't think MS still gave public performances? So then I have to mention D K Pattamal!

And I did say it was kind of a random selection
