Hi,

Welcome to Chennai. Its a good idea to venture out early in the morning. Which hotel are you going to stay ? accordingly I can suggest the beach thats clsoer to the hotel.

You can take a walk on the promenade in the beach and also view the sunrise. However it is not advisable to walk closer to the sea shore as it would not be clean.

Walking on the beach road ( platform ) is really good by about 5.30 AM

Raghu

hotel chennai

Hi-
I will be at the end of my 2 weeks travel in Tamil Nadu. Arriving at 4am in Chennai and departing the next day to Goa (by air). Taxi within the City.
My intention is to stay around 2000INR if possible. I just don't know which part of the City is central and attractive for such a short stay.
Thanks for your help-

Ok , since you will be leaving in just a days time , I think it would be better if you got an accomodation near the Airport .
Within the INR2000 I think mount manor is a good hotel .

It is near the airport and they offer drop /pick up service as well .

Hi

If your budget is around 2000 Per day, then you can opt for New Woodlands Hotel on Radhakrishan Road , which is considered central. the beach is just 5 minutes by rick and about 10 minutes fast walk. An AC room on single status would cost 1400 INR inclusive of taxes. Its better to stay in the city limits so that commuting within is easier. Mano of our IMers have stayed here and if anyone is reading this can offer their comments.

What time is your flight to Goa the next day ? If you want to do shopping you can do it all through the day, if you want to see places, then May be you can take the Hop off , hop on bus to see places of tourist interests.

Given below is the weblink for the Online booking of the Hop On Hop Off tour to Mahabalipuram.

Oh this is fantastic!
thank you so much for your info. I am leaving the next day at 15.00 so I'll have plenty of time to give a superficial look at the city. the Hop-On/Off sounds like a good idea. And the hotel too. thank you very much!

Great, in that case you can use the time the next day to visit Citi Centre and Spencers Mall and do some window/actual shopping. If you like Indian Curios / small gifts for giveaways, you may visit the Victoria Technical Institute ( VTI ) located a few minutes from Spencers Plaza.

Enjoy Your trip.

Raghu

I went to Citi Centre this week. Believe it or not, Landmark there was the only place (including Nokia "Care Centres") to have a replacement batter for my phone, and I urgently needed one

There is a Landmark, and there is a Lifestyle. Apart form that, there are Western fashion shops. There is absolutely nothing for the visitor, who would be better off buying their Western clothes at home. The entire place is for the Wannabe-Western young Indian --- there are not even any silk or sari shops.

Spencer Plaza gives you the same Landmark (Lifestyle? Not sure, but again, who comes to India to take home Western-style household stuff?) along with dozens of other shops selling just about everything from gems to gods to gadgets.

The only disadvantage of Spencers, is that it is hard to window shop without those damn-fool touts trying to drag you by the neck into their Kashmiri shops --- which is a shame, as there are some wondrously beautiful things in those windows, and one might well gravitate into the shop anyway if their owners weren't so rabidly anxious to get you in there!

Anyway, the message from this shopoholic is:

Citi Centre: Forget it.
Spencers: Visit, but be ready to show your earplugs to the touts
