Custom Framing in Chennai

Hi! I live in Mylapore & am a new resident.

I recently bought some textile art & want to have it framed, possibly a nice wooden frame. The size is approximately 2 ft (width) by 4 ft (length).

Any suggestions of where I can go to have this framed? I'm looking for something simple and not too expensive at all. Just something that will display the art well.

Thanks in advance! Hope there isn't a thread about this already that I've missed.

There is probably lots of places; look out for pictures of gods, and that sort of thing. I can't think, but I bet there is one in Luz Church Road. If not, then nearby in Royapettah High Road. I think there is one at the bottom of Royapettah High Road, not too far away from the temple tank, on the right with the tank behind you.

Hope I'm not sending you on a wild goose chase!

Hey Nick, I do believe the store you are talking about is called Gurubaran and is fairly good at framing large/larger items. He *DOES* charge higher rates for the NRI types but does a good job and I've liked using him...higher cost and all!

On Kader Nawaz Khan road you will find a couple of stores selling furniture/knicknacks that look/feel antique"ish" and they will frame items for you as well at exhorbitant rates, but they do have some really nice looking frames, if totally unique is what you are looking for.

On Kader Nawaz Khan road...

Nungambakkam, posher, more expensive, and not so close to sg402 --- but certainly another must-explore area

Thanks for the suggestions. I looked at a Gurubaran Tanjore Art website (said it was in Mylapore, so I'm thinking it's the same one..?) and this isn't the type of framing I'm thinking of. These are the synthetic material frames with lots of flourishes, etc.

website: http://www.gurubarantanjorearts.com/frames.html

I am looking for simple wooden frames (dark teak wood or even lighter colored woods), more like what you might see at Fab India or Anokhi (except they don't sell custom made frames). Does anyone know of a place such as that?

Thanks for helping with such a detailed request..! IM & all of you are a huge help!

Yes, I was thinking (I think) of the Tanjore place, which means I was wrong --- because what you want is not that sort of place, but a much more downmarket type of place, where a guy sits with his saw and stuff, and surrounded by the sort of god pics that ordinary people can afford to have in their houses. There will be one!

On the other hand, maybe you shoudl try out TahitianPearl's place...

There are a couple of small framing shops in Luz, you have to find them by walking around that area or you can ask your neighbors for help. Try to get a Chennai Yellow book, most of them are listed there.

Nick, you're exactly right! i am thinking of one of those places that deliver the simple wood frames. I'm not sure why but these look so much nicer to me than the (more expensive) ones at Gurubaran Tanjore Arts. I bet the latter are of pretty good quality though.

And you weren't wrong -- I appreciate all the suggestions!

A neighbor also told me to look at these tiny framing shops near Nilgiri's and up and down Luz Church road.

Thanks!!!

Hey SG.....I've had several types of things framed at Gurubaran and thin woods ones are available at both his stores, which are opposite each other. The fancy one is on the same side as the tank and the "plain/simple" directly opposite it. He does sell the fancy imported ones, but I wanted rustic framing on one item, plain dark wood trim on one and then I think I did pick up some imported ones for some patta chitra I had picked up in Orissa once which needed double matting.

Hi Friends!

I visited Gurubaran's and I agree -- it's a great shop with a lot of variety of what you can get done. I was wrong in that it has a wide variety of price ranges as well as types of frames, both synthetics and wooden ones. Thanks to everyone who rec'd it!

In the end, I went and ordered 3 items framed (2 fabric art pieces and 1 art print/copy)as well as 1 mirror from this shop which is much closer to my home and, I thought, a bit cheaper than Gurubaran's (though it offers similar services, it's a bit more low key):

United Brothers at 174 Luz Church Road, Mylapore.

Am I allowed to post their phone number? If not, please go ahead and remove it, webmasters. Here it is: 45534141/45534149

There are 2 women who work there, a manager and an assistant (at least when I went in the evening after work) and both speak English well enough to place orders and ask for advice. They are open from 10am to 8pm weekdays and Saturdays as well.

The frames cost me: Rs. 600, 900, and 1000 as they were all different frames and sizes. Mine will be framed with glass, but you can chose to get it framed without glass which looks nice if you have interesting textiles. They also have a neat 'matte' (spelling?) finish glass which is a bit more pricey. All the frames displayed have diff prices on the back and you can choose wooden (more expensive, ranges from Rs. 50 per ft to Rs. 350 was the most expensive I saw) or synthetic (much more cheaper starting from Rs. 20.

I also ordered a 2 ft by 1 ft mirror in an antique teak wood that will cost Rs. 1100. This is significantly cheaper than the Rs. 1500- Rs. 8000 mirrors I have seen being sold at several Fab Indias and Lifestyle Home Centre type stores. Though of-course, it's much more expensive than the fabulous Rs. 150 HUGE plastic mirror I bought for my bathroom in Royapettah High Road. :P

Hope this helps others who are also looking to get some framing, home decor done.

Thanks again, IM'ers!

p.s. most orders take 3 to 4 days; mine will be ready this Saturday evening.

pibikay, I think that is the shop we have been talking about.

sg402 --- you are free to mention, recommend, or criticise any business, and give contact details, as long as you are not personally associated with it, and as long as it is not in your first post. Exchange of information is the thing; advertising we resist

Delighted you got your stuff sorted, and you are now becoming a Chennai shopper

By the way... It occurs to me that my doc is not far from CIT colony, if anyone there needs a personal recommendation for a general doctor.

Doctor in Alwarpet / Mylapore

Thanks, Nick!

& Yes, I wouldn't mind getting your doctor's info as personal references are always helpful when it comes to health care!
