Cholamandal Artists Village

I'm leaving for my second trip to India in about 3 weeks. Heading for Chennai, Madurai, and then up to Mumbai. During this trip I'm scheduled to visit a place called Cholamandal Artists Village around Chennai. I was wondering if anyone had visited there. I'm an art teacher and very interested in Indian art both traditional and contemporary. Has anyone had any direct experience with this place?

I visited 2/3 years ago. I went with a friend who is interested in art. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to matters of art and I wouldn't have gone if it wasn't for my friend. But there is a hall where you can see exhibits of artists work. We were very lucky and a resident artist showed us around the colony, explained its history (he was an original resident from when it opened) and invited us to a few artists' worshops, which were inside the houses at the colony. If you can get someone to show you around then it will be a very worthwhile experience. We just turned up and my friend asked if there was someone who could show us around or speak to. Luckily there was.

Been there years ago when a friend, an art critic, used to live there. Most houses are owned by artists and they have several foreign artists visiting. As Colin says it will be rewarding if you can get to meet some of them.

IndiaMike is such a great site! I always find people talking about things I'm interested in and having trouble getting info on! I am very interested in this artist community. I am going to S. India for 6 weeks in jan/Feb with a friend and we are both artists intending to do a lot of painting outdoors in Tamil nadu and Kerala. One of the first stops is Mamallapuram, since I have some Indian friends there and we'll be staying there 5 or 6 days. I've heard that the Cholamandal has rooms available, does anyone who's been there know? About how far is it from Chennai or Mamallapuram? We'll arrive in Chennai in the morning, plan to be in Mamallapuram in the eveing, wondering about stopping on the way, or taking a day trip up. Is it a very big place? How long did you spend there?
thanks,all!
