Though having a some experience certainly helps, I don't expect to find anything great either, though maybe I'll get lucky ; I understand most of what you'll find in your average Indian music shop is made in China. Though the factory produced Chinese ones are improving, most are not exactly high quality.

I'm mostly looking to have fun shopping, be able to cheer myself up when I'm feeling homesick, and I'll probably donate it to the local elementary school when I get home.

My understanding, from a couple of years ago, was that most (many?) instruments available in India- at least the popular ones- are made in Kolkata.

Certainly true of the sitar, violin and tabla I bought- none of them in Kolkata, btw.

Violins will be easy to find in Chennai; there a many players and students of carnatic music on the violin.

Hope you'll find time to attend some concrts to see how it is!

Many of the concerts are free, due to sponsorship. In 'the season' (December/January) the evening concerts will not be free but there will be plenty of free music going on in the daytime.

Have you checked that skins from Asia can be brought back to Europe? It would be such a shame to find exactly what you were looking for, only to have it confiscated on your return.

It isn't skins, as in untreated leather, it is an item made from skins.

I know there are countries in the world that might even be that fussy, and I guess it would be a good idea to make sure that one's own is not among them. I know that a lot of these drums, and the spares for repairing and maintaining them, do gettaken to UK.

I'm pretty sure that France is ok for bringing back my skins. They are not finneky that way usually, like in the USA...

Thanks for the flashing yellow, though.

As for calling, I'll try. Is it +4 1/2 hours from Paris?

And Nick - H, does your Royapettha store have a phone number?

Thanks to you all for my percussion buddies!

Pondy may also be very small.

They have an outlet in Hyderabad too. A few clavinovas, a couple of guitars and some small stuff. Chennai is ten times the size.

@ Nick- this place (musee musicals) is opposite "Tarapore Towers" on mount road- when proceeding from the beach to Gemini flyover- stick to the left, and as soon as you cross cosmopolitant club- the Gate to musee musicals is on the left. This is next to a chinese restaurant. If you see buhari's hotel - then you have overshot the gate.

Hi madan80.
Is Buharis Hotel OK to stay in? Not too bad and not too expensive?
I might do an overnight thing, near to the music store, why not?
Or are there better options for a hotel near by?
