Can anyone recommend any of the above?
Another one recommended to me is the Blue Lagoon resort. Any feedback on this? Their website is cr@p so don't bother googling it. This might be unrealistic, but I'm looking for a place that's on the beach (or has its own beach), safe, hygienic and actually 'works', i.e. if you ask for room service or hosekeeping someone actually turns up with what you asked for!) Location just south of Chennai, so we can get into town if we need to, and get out to Mahabalipuram etc. if we feel like it. |

Budget, please?
I got to have lunch and spend a few hours at Taj Fisherman's Cove a few weeks ago. It's great, but probably one of the most expensive. Near to Pondicherry (I know, you want to be near Chennai, not Pondicherry, but just thought I'd mention it) is a place called Dune. I have not been there, but drooled over the photos taken by a friend who has. Back to the area you are asking about. Mamallapuram is less than an hour from the Southern edge of Chennai; depending on where in Chennai you are heading and what time of day it is, add anything from zero to 90 minutes (barring any really bad jams) onto that, and you can see that anywhere between the two is pretty convenient for either.

ECR and Budget dont go hand in hand...
If you want budget, you can look at hotels in the Pondicherry side of ECR or in Mahabalipuram, forget Chennai ECR. Nick, Dune is also pretty expensive, havent been there myself but just heard... |

The rooms in Dunes start at Rs. 7000 a night, so I'd say it's not the budget place OP is looking for. But I have also seen the pictures and plans are already made for a wedding anniversary weekend there next year

marirstk hasn't told us how much!
But the sort place where everything happens as described really will be expensive. Mirjam, I'm sure you'll have a great, and expensive, weekend! ![]() |

Dune certainly looks uber-kool, but not what I have in mind right now. Hope you have a great time there, Mirjam! No feedback on the Blue Lagoon place, I take it. Having had a look at the GRT (8k-14k), Ideal (4k-12k) and BL (2k) websites, I'm not really sure where to pitch the budget. I think what I don't get is "what am I paying for - marketing hype or functional service". I know ultimately it'll be a trade-off between the two but would be nice to find a balance. Added uncertainty for the moment is because of how many we might be eventually - one-three families with 1/2 young kids each. Would a 5k-7k budget (per unit: room, cottage, etc.) price me out of the criteria I set? Assuming there will be something in that range, any suggestions? Thanks for your replies. |

Another approach to this would be to enquire which of the resorts are used as weekend watering holes by the young IT/BPO crowd, who then proceed to spread each other over the road on the way back home
. You might want to avoid those! But don't ask me: I am so much not part of any young crowd! GRT is practically in Mamallapuram. If you are likely to want to spend evenings in Chenai it might be a bit far. Had lunch there one day in Dec 2005; it was ok. |
