Chennai: Plus size clothing?
Are there any women's clothing stores that sell plus-size (U.S. 18) ready-made salwar kameez and kurtas?
Many thanks and I am learning so much reading all the posts. Hopefully will be there next month. Last edited by machadinha : Feb 22nd, 2008 at 16:51. Reason: adjusted title |

Welcome to Chennai, you can get custom made Salwar and Kurtas, tailoring is cheap compared to the west, if you are looking for readymade clothes in plus size you might not find many stores that cater to this segment, there are lots of good tailors you can get anything custom tailored for a very reasonable price.

ISN is right. Very few plus sizes of anything are available. Whether it's kurtis or salwars, even the XL sizes are smaller than the US ones. Getting them stitched is the only option. But it's cheap to get them stitched and the tailors usually do a rush job for you. If you need it on Friday, tell them you need it on Tuesday (a few days before you actually need it), then you'll get it on Friday.

absolutely true. I run about a size 8/10 and sometimes I wear kurtas that are XL! In India I do not pay any attention whatsoever to what sizes are listed on clothes. I have one kurta that is marked small and it's voluminous on me.
You will also need to get clothes made if you are in any way "not the norm". the woman yoga student who met me in india last month was short, so all salwars were too long for her legs; the arms of long sleeved kurtas were too long; and she had smallish shoulders but an ample bust so no kurta fit her very well -- huge in the shoulder area, tight across the front.

There is a brand called ALL an acronym of (A Little Larger), that makes clothes for men and women in Plus sizes. (I only shop there..
)its a brand from Pantloons. If you are shopping in Chennai, then head over to Spencer Plaza's Pantloon store and you have ALL availble on the 1st floor's Mezzanine section of the shop. Alternatively - you can get the Kurta stiched. Many shops offer salwar clothing and stitching. The advantage is you can get it any style you want. Either as a Salwar and Kameeze or Pathan style or parallels etc etc. My wife pickec up some nice material from a shop in Alsa Mall (Nh 4, Montieth Road, Chennai, 600008), and that nice lady stitched it for her as well.. it was a good fit and quite economical as well.

Hi Annerobyn,
If you come here, I could take you to the market and to a tailor to stitch clothes. There are some excellent clothes and fabrics to be bought here! Do you know yet when you are coming to Chennai? Mirjam |

You'll have a hard time finding ready-made in size 18.
It is better and just as cheap to have a salwaar chamis tailored to fit you. A usual priced, dayware, nothing fancy, unstitched cotton salwaar suit can cost 350 rupees to 650. Takes only one or two days. Should only cost you 150 rupees for tailoring. I always can tell a western woman wearing a ready made suit. It doesn't fit right in the shoulders and hangs shapeless like a sack. A tailored suit is sooooooo much better for a heavier set woman. It just looks good! |

Thank you Manali4now. And you are right. I purchased an SK here in Canada just so I had something to wear the first couple of days. I was lucky to find one that fits in the chest, but yes it looks like a potato sack!!! I hope to find a better fit once I arrive. I am anxious to have several kurtas made as well.

OR buy material (fabulous selection of fabric here and at such great prices) and get mix'n'match (V.fashionable) kurtas & pants made to fit. My tailor charges R60 for a kurta top and R60 for salwa pants and I get them done in different colours and fabric to mix and wear (goes a long way!). I don't normally wear a scarf/dupatta but have purchased these separately (from saree shops) also in different fabric/patterns to mix and wear if needed. Since i normally reside overseas these are more wearable than the coordinated outfits, once I return home.

Thank you Fusiggy - the mix and match sounds like a great idea.
What are your recommendations for a tailor and where to find material. I will be staying at the Apollo Speciality Hospital and am quite nervous about venturing out too far on my own. |
