Chennai Ladies Tailor for Salwar Khameez, materials?

Hi

Well I thought I was heading to India in January but my in-laws called yesterday to tell hubby and I we are needed within 2 weeks. So off we go!

Now that I am a visitor and not a native to Chennai anymore, I was wondering if anyone knew a good tailor in Chennai for ladies Salwar Khameez stiching? I have a sample that fits perfectly. I would like a tailor who is faster, I dont mind paying more for quality stitching??

Also besides Naidu Hall(which I really can't stand anymore) anyone know good place to buy salwar dress materials in Chennai?

Thank you all in advance

Well, I guess Naidu Hall is for the youngsters!

If you want day-to-day wear, I'd suggest a couple of shops near Luz corner, just on the right after the crossroads, going up towards Royapettah (on RH Road).

For fancier stuff head for T. Nagar. I guess Nali always gets my recommendation, but it is far from the only shop there.

For a smaller, quieter, store, try Rasi Silk in Mylapore (near the temple).

But, as I said in a recent post, you don't have to look far to find a shop selling salwars, where-ever you are.

You don't have to look far for a tailor, either. But finding a good one, Hmmm... I used to recommend a guy in Abhiramapuram who stitched Kurtas for me (although a lady's tailor) but when Mrs N used him he was very slow.

The shops will always nominate someone, of course, or have their own. But a personal recommendation would be nice.

Hey Nick, Thank you for your wonderful tips! I always remember you being a fan of Nalli, I had a bad experience there once, and we both argued about it too on another post! Boy you arguing with an Indian woman about saree shops?? You are a bold one I must say. My preference is Kumaran or RMKV. Will keep those in mind though.

I would love to meet you and your wonderful wife Mrs.N after hearing so much about her. Are you in Chennai the second week of October? I was looking at your house building on your site, how is it coming along?

Do you all need anything from the US? Let's meet for dinner or afternoon coffee/tea? Any suggestions? I am ashamed of my lack of Chennai knowledge these days, back in my reckless college heyday until 2002, I rocked that city knowing every newest hippest store, restaurant, gallery, function, party, movie theater(Satyam!), and every side gullyway/alley to get anywhere. Chennai might be a conservative city compared to others in India, but I DEFINETLY didnt contribute to that opinion ..sigh nostalgia Will PM you and we can make some plans..

second week in October

Oh!

Just making plans to spend October in UK. Getting a touch home-sick and more-than-a-touch stressed out over our 8-month decoration project. Thought I'd go before it gets too cold (it's always too cold for someone who's acclimatised to Chennai!) and I can hang around with my music friends for Navaratri then go out of London for the second half if the month.

May not happen... we'll keep in touch.

I don't remember arguing with you about Nalli! I wonder what it was about? Trouble is, even I don't have the energy for more than one silk shop, so I tend not to get to the others. RmKV have a new double-sided four-colour sari: they are probably the most innovative, and I'd probably like their shop a lot if I spent more time there.

I tend to stay out of the trendy or posh places, but certainly willing to make an exception for a meetup with an IM friend!

PM me your dates and locality and stuff...

small shop next to a bigger sari shop under a travels company?

Great-looking shops, but I've only looked in the window. Expensive, I think....

It's been two years now; I guess the local terminology comes more easily than the 'foreign' words!

And, of course, I wanted to be sure that ISN and DocGirl understood

I had the BEST experience at Lady Hawk on a little side street off of TTK Road.

Shop # G21 Moogambika Complex 4
Lady Desika Road (Near Alwarpet, Signal)
Mylapore-Chennai-600 004
ph: 2499 0346, 5210 6670

The manager/co-owner (Yashwantri) was simply a gem to work with and I'll be going back there again for more gorgeous pieces. They create outfits there and do tailoring as well for a very reasonable price and within a wonderful timeframe as long as you let them know when needed.

If you go there please be sure to tell him the woman and husband (both with long reddish gold hair from US) recommended you to him. I'd love to see his expression!
