Hello, IM people

I am soon to leave for Chennai in Feb. I was wondering how hot it will be in Chennai around February and March.
My problem is... I am quite susceptible to heat, and even in my country, i.e., Korea, I am like a melted jelly when the temperature goes up to 28 - 30 degrees in summer.. (gr..)

am thinking of staying in Chennai for about a month and then move up to the North.

Thanks in advance, Cheerio

*would an (far-east) asian girl get too much attention if she's wearing a sleeveless shirt and shorts?
umm.. yeah. depends on how i look, still..

Current max temp in Chennai is 32 C.
In Feb and March it will progressively go up to 35 - 39
Then 40 plus in April/May.

Sanjay... I wish you would just nip down here before reporting the temperature!

It has barely been above 30 the last few days, my thermometer shows 25/26 at night and 27/30 in the day.

The newspaper reported temperatures for yesterday are 21min, 30max. I really can't be bothered to jump in a car at midnight and drive to the met office to check it out (so I don't really expect Sanjay to book that flight), but I don't believe it has dropped as low as 21 near my home. Decidedly cool though.

Be warned: these are our mid-winter temperatures and it will be warming up again soon! You might be ok for the rest of february. March will be climbing into the mid 30s or more, and from mid-April to mid-May (and maybe June) it can indeed exceed 40.

And quite a lot of humidity to go with it.

Hope I'm not putting you off!!!!

Oh, and... you might get away with the sleaveless shirt, but shorts would certainly attract attention. Remember it can be more comfortable (and safe) to keep the sun off your skin by covering up with a light fabric.

Today's temp is closer to 30; the 32 figure is forecast for a couple of days later, on msn india.

MSN! Oh, well....

Actually, today's temperature has been lower. But there seems to alwasy be a variance between reported temperatures and the actual.

I have ForecastFox as a Firefox addin: it tells me it is now 25. My own outdoor thermometer says 26.8

Forecast Fox uses Accuweather.com . Forcasting 28/29 highs for next week. I'd say that's realistic.

Try it for your city a few times and see how it measures up: might be better than microsoft!

The sun, though, is intense, and given the humidity, it feels hotter.

According to my downstairs neighbour, it is currently too cold to go out before 9.00am!!!!!

Prepare for almost permanent jellyhood in Chennai!

umm, you would have to define "too much attention" for that one.
Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10, I would say 6 or 7.

Thanks for the nice replies, it definitely helps.

As soon as I detect my jelly-ing process, I might as well bounce up to the north.. phew.
