chennai floods
Today's email from a friend in Chennai:
"Chennai is flooded with heavy rains. In 24 hrs. 27 cms rain. I stayed at home, didnt move anywhere, watching the news in TV. Lots of areas are flooded, up to neck, up to knee, up to hip..... No offices are opened, schools were declared two days holiday, including today. Even today the life is not normal for so many. So many places are like islands in Tamilnadu(but not like your Katrina, Rita and Wilma). ...so the storm was bearable we can say, but people who came out of their houses suffered to go back, coz there was no buses, no autos, no trains. All flights were diverted to Bangalore . All trains were cancelled, coz the railway track was full of water." just FYI, for anyone who wants to know the weather situation in Chennai.

Thanks for the info yogagal - especially interesting for people who're just on their way to either Chennai, or Bangalore (could be that some flights may be delayed in take-off & landing at Bangalore too!)

Bangalore hit by heavy rains also!
The flood situation in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka is still grim as torrential rains set off by the northeast monsoon continues to batter parts of south India. Krishnagiri, Erode, Namakkal and Salem in Tamil Nadu are amongst the worst hit districts. The Dharmapuri-Bangalore highway has also been badly affected and there are reports of breaches in Srirangam dam in Trichy. Meanwhile, the Vizag airport has been declared fit for operation and flights will resume from tomorrow. All flights had been suspended since October 15 after the runway was flooded due to heavy rains. In Bangalore, the situation has improved a bit overnight after the city experienced its wettest October in nearly 50 years. The city had received 52.5 cm of rain till Tuesday afternoon, a new record for October. Authorities have closed the schools and colleges for two days. Several neighbourhoods in the southern parts of the city, where several IT firms are located, have been marooned. Civic authorities are facing an uphill task to evacuate the affected persons to safer places. Power supply has been hit as 25 power transformers were damaged by the rain, hours before Bangalore’s annual IT show. Almost one lakh people are left without electricity. In Tamil Nadu, the situation also continues to be extremely grim. Fifty-six people have lost their lives since the first of October due to electrocution and wall collapse. More than 30,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas near the Cauvery and other rivers, and 1500 people are marooned in Kiraramanallur village in Perambalur district. In Trichy, one of the worst affected districts, schools and colleges are closed for the second day today. Four trains from Chennai to Bangalore have also been cancelled including the Chennai-Mysore Shatabdi, Chennai-Bangalore Shatabdi, Lalbagh Express and Bangalore Express. And it doesn't look like there's going to be a respite any time soon. The Met department has forecast more heavy rains for Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in the next two to three days. Having just returned from Chennai a couple of days ago, I saw very little impact from the floods. The roads were clear, and the airport was open. some fields were a bit waterlogged, but nothing much.
i was mainly south of Chennai. Apparently the worst happened to the North. The Cyclone was heading across the south of Chennai, but veered north just before landfall, and battered north Chennai. While I was there, tv reported 50,000 evacuated from Chennai, 50% elec power shut down - much for safety reasons, Chennai central railway shut down, etc. |

Desperate for a place to stay!
Hi everyone!
I'm new to this place and it seems hopeful to have people to help you out! I was reading the posts by yogagal and I'm more or less in the same situation, may be a little worse. This is my scenario- Need: a place to stay for a month in Chennai (on vacation) Type: Apartment/Guesthouse not too fancy, just a room with attached bathroom People: To be occupied by at most two people Budget: Something "reasonable". I don't want to quote. I welcome all your replies! Areas: Something not too far away from the railway station would help Duration: December 16th 2004 to January 15 2005 I'm really looking forward to all your suggestions... Thanks |
