I think there is a very cheap YWCA not far from the station, I seem to remember it getting a good write up from some of our members a while ago.

A station like Chennai Central will have many rooms and dormentries, even if someone found the place OK, it doesn't mean the place you'll stay will be the same.

I'd guess the rail staff are not used to a woman staying on her own, this might be worth considering if you want to stay there.

Remember it's the YWCA but it takes both men and women

There's a YMCA here too --- in a rather nice wide, tree-lined avenue. But it is quite a way from Central station (Indira Naga, South of Adyar).

Telling the wrong thing to the driver could be problematic

If you prefer a hotel, Metro Manor is a good place with a nice restaurant. It is a little less than a mile from the Central and is bang opposite the Nehru Stadium (Gate 4) on Sydenhams Road.
