There is no good place to relax in Chennai Airport, you can find good hotels near the airport.

Dear Lord- not that I saw!

Do find a hotel as suggested.

Chennai.

Thanks Crowgirl for advice.

Am flying in at 00.50 , will then catch first train out to Madurai, 08.30(?). No time for hotel.
Always when I come back , or rather come again, always like to see the light, sun rise the first morning there.

Interesting profile and interesting those that `travel` with you.

" On the long journey of human life, faith is the best of companions; it is the best refreshment on the journey; and it is the greatest possession"

Two qustions.
Did you realy meet the Ginsberg and what are you doing emailing at 03.30?

Why not the crack Vaigai Express?

Are you taking the Madras Egmore-Guruvayur express. You can have some more time and rest in the hotel by considering the Vaigai or Pallavan and change at Trichy to Madurai

What time are you reaching?

Tony
It depends on your program and when you intend to reach Madurai and what time you are landing at Madras.

The Guruvayur Express is a decent train and is in fact preferable as it has sleeper and AC accomodation. But Vaigai is more reliable. It is akin to going via Carstairs or taking the slower Dumfries route.

Chennai is a vibrant city and is the detroit of asia! You[in a generic sense] can get better hotels for a much cheaper price than you can ever imagine in the UK. You can get japanese food, italian anything[ as it has large expatriate population]. The mariott is there, the sheraton is there, the hilton. the oberoi so many choices. Madurai also has decent places to look,

There is no use squirming of dengue or mosquitos if people do not bother to do their homework properly. It pains me when India is written in a harsh manner by journalists who have done a whistle stop tour of India and write like they know India better than seasoned travelers do. India is not exotic. It has its problems and one must be safe ,just as avoiding Bolton after 21.00hrs or getting lynched by yobs as it happened recently. It is not exotic or a land of snake charmers. One can have the same comforts which one has here. With the same pound converted you can get much more than you get here. Indian trains run on time and they work 24*7 no engineering works and no replacement buses and no signal failures and no begging for a taxi at 00.30hrs and the chap trying to prove that it was your fault that you took the doomed train. There are benches to sit at and retiring rooms. Trichy has some fine hotels which are a British hangover. You could take a bus from Trichy to madurai. Assimilate and do not fear and be casual and wear cotton clothes. In fact clothes are much cheaper to buy in India. Do not pack many clothes or books. Everything is available in india. There may be some problems, but do not get frightened by the media.

Its like going to a seedy place in London and falling sick. Madras Central is one of the best maintained stations in India and there is no need to worry. Southern Railway is a much better zone than other zones. Its like going from one railway to scot rail. It is self explanatory which is a better rail company.

1. Yes I did truly meet A Ginsberg. I was very young and it was all I had within me to put on a front acting blase as if the party and all that went with it was an everyday occurrence with me.

2. Not sure what you meant about posting/time. I live in US and so am many hours different from Indian time. I normally don't post too late in the evening here and if I do it is seldom after midnight.

Chennai

York Katni
Thanks for information.
This year will see my 23 visit to India. I love the place and the people. I have been to Chennai a few times and indeed have a friend who lives on the outskirts. Last time flying in was about 10 years ago but on this occassion am just traveling through.
No time plans to get to Madurai but am looking forward to seeing my Tamil friends (brothers) who live on the outskirts of Madurai.
