I'm so happy I found this forum! I'm going to be in Chennai late July through mid October for a volunteer/internship program. I'm applying for a scholarship right now and have no idea what I should be budgeting for things like clothing, personal supplies, telephone and local transportation. Any suggestions?

Also, what's the weather like that time of year?

In October there is the possibility of rain, and it shouldn't be too hot (depending, of course, on your definition of 'too hot' }

I don't think we can help on the budget side unless we know more about you and your lifestyle

I'm thinking maybe four outfits of simple, cheap, cool cotton; maybe one that's slightly nicer if I have to go do anything "official" for my internship. I'll be working with poor women, so I don't really want to flaunt that even my poor college student dollars go a bit further. I have to admit my complete ignorance as far as clothing (and most everything else, actually): is a salwar kameez what women tend to wear everyday?

What would a 10 min phone call back to the US run me?

I understand Chennai is over the worst heat by August, but does that mean mid 90s or over a 100(F)?

Thank you for that link; it's very helpful. : )

It varies from provider to provider but on an average it is around 10 to 15 cents per minute.If you feel homesick and if you like to keep in touch with your family frequently then you can take a VOIP phone (VONAGE) from USA to India, but you have to pay for the broadband internet in India.

Traditional Chennai women tend to wear a saree, salwar is north Indian woman’s traditional wear, but it is widely accepted in Chennai.
