Not an expert, and I stand to be corrected, but Chennai is not an ancient town, it was founded as a trading post by the Brits, and, although it encompassed some existing villages, it probably wouldn't exist otherwise.
I suppose our two most-visited temples are Kapaliswara, in Mylapore, and Partasarathy, in Triplicane. The latter I know nothing about, not even sure of its correct spelling .The former is on a site that is said to be that of an ancient temple, but I don't think the current buildings date back more than a few hundred years, if that. I am well known to be a Mylapore fan, so with my usual partiality, I would say that, if you see nothing else in Chennai, visit Mylapore, see the temple and the surrounding streets ![]()

Mylapore is the birth place of Tamil saint Thiruvalluvar who lived around 2000 years ago. As you said the current temple in Mylapore is around 200 years old but the original temple is said to have existed much nearer to the shore. The diety has been sung about by all the four Nayamars whose period is 7th to 9th Century AD. Sri Parthasarathy temple is equally old has been there a lot pasurams by the Alwars on this temple (again the same period). Tiruvottriyur (north Chennai), Thiruvanmiyur also have lovely temples which are again 1000 years old. In fact there are atleast 20 temples in and around Chennai which can be dated back to 1000 plus years. |
