Desikachar is the most famous teacher in Chennai. He has a big center there. Here is the link http://www.kym.org/

A little history lesson for you:
Krishnamacharya was the founder of this school. He was the teacher of Desikacharya, his son, and, of Pattabi Jois, Iyengar, etc. |

I've been looking for such a place in Chennai for a while... the options are there, but they are really pricey. As far as KYM goes, I was really excited about it until I found out it would cost me US$50 per session - if you have time, you can do their one month course, but it is full time and if you are working here (as I am) that's not an option.
I saw in the Indian Express last week that there is an ashtanga teacher here, but it is Rs. 2000 per session! If you want to check it out, the names I wrote down are Shrimati Gopalakrishnan and Ravi Swami @ Orion Health Laboratory, Mandaveli. I haven't contacted them yet cause I was frightened off by the cost. For the time being I am resigned to just doing a self-practice in my room each morning. Would be nice to find an ashtanga community here though so let me know if you find anything more... |

Krishnamacharya did NOT found the school, Desikachar did in honor of his father. KYM does NOT have group classes which is a big misconception with westerners. Their concentration is yoga therapy for private students. I have completed their month long course and a two week intensive there, and earlier this month had private classes. as far as I know, there is no traditional astanga yoga taught in Chennai, i.e., in the lineage of P. Jois.

YogaGal, you are technically correct. I use school and system interchangeably. I was a student of this system in 1970. Things were a lot different and Desikacharya was not getting paid Bollywood star prices for giving seminars. Things have really changed. Back then it was Ashtanga Yoga. Jois is not in this lineage?

We will be relocating to Chennai in the next year, I have been practicing Bikram here in the states - so what I am hearing is that there are no group classes and privates are super expensive?!

I finally found a place....... and Drottie, you are right about the people who teach but their fees are not what you have quoted. I just joined and they charge Rs.1200 per month for a six days/week schedule!

prassanraj,
I'd be interested in learning about you are learning yoga. I have taken a few yoga classes years ago.. I don't even know if it was ashtana or anything else. The place was in ranjith road in kotturpuram. Does anyone know about that or where they have moved. Does anyone know where I can go for some group lesson at reasonable rates.. not some outfit looking to make a quick buck. Thanks in advance |

The road is empty in the mornings, the time I go there. I would say you would get plenty of parking space anytime, as it is in a lane away from the main road.
