| Hi guys, We are a live in couple, we recently moved to Chennai for work and looking for a beach house or resort as we've never been to a beach. We both have a few comp-offs and we are planning to take a couple of days off during weekdays the coming week but we've heard that it is extremely difficult to book beach house or a cottage in beach resorts here in Chennai? Would any of you know anything about problems unmarried couples might face? Safety is very important and second thing is it has to be right on the beach. Are there any beach resorts that meet these criteria that you guys might know of? Budget is within 10 grands for 2 days and 2 nights. |

| Senior Member | You may try casurina bay . The rooms are quite cheap and it is on the beach . I think they might be ok with a live in couple . |

| Why would it be difficult? It is not tourist high season. Why would you face problems? |

| @ stocklotgarment: The price is not an issue, safety and a good location is what we need. @ Nick-H: I don't know, some people say that Tamilnadu government/the police has placed some restrictions and some people say that due to illegal activities resorts avoid renting out rooms/cottages to unmarried couples! |

| Mahabalipuram springs to mind as an obvious beach destination, just two hours or so by bus south of Chennai. It's popular with Indian honeymooners and love doves, shouldn't be any problem, and there are plenty of guesthouses in varying classes to choose from. The beach isn't great btw, but oh well. As so often, be a little careful with swimming here, due to the undercurrents (so preferably stay where you can stand).

| Probably the best place will be 'Ideal Beach' resort - just in 2-3 km BEFORE Mahabalipuram, ECR, expats favorite. Undisturbed (guarded) and very comfortable beach, shaded by the palm trees, with hammocks... really nice place! Out of season, one can expect accommodation for a couple somewhere near 2,500 Rs/night. More budget, but comfortable option is 'Sea Breeze' resort, Mahabalipuram. |

| Suggest Ideal Resorts -as above- but if you can afford, GRT Temple Bay is best value for money. Spare more $$, Fisherman's Cove is best |

| Temple Bay would be more affordable but you would have to shell out for transport - which btw, would not be much even by car. It is a nice place, and I doubt they would bother asking marriage certificates In any case, it is assumed this side of the world that a couple checking into a hotel is a couple ![]() |

| There are quite a few places on the ECR stretch depending on how far you plan to go - it goes beyond Pondy and one can keep heading down to nagapattinam (and further). One thing i'd like to add is the TN state govt, the general public and the police seem to have major moral issues with live-in couples. Have been there myself with my gf and had no problems - except inquisitive bearers and general insensitivity to hospitality issues (such as knocking b4 entering!! WTF???), but then we are journalists and had a car and stuff. Other friends have given bad reviews abt their experience in Tam land, where the police shower attention on ppl holding hands, while molesters and eve-teasers generally have a field day. Be careful, brave, and have a good trip! ![]()
